50 things i learned in my first year of high school
1. Procrastination makes life really hard so avoid it as much as possible.
2. Do assignments as soon as you get them, especially ones that are long-term and worth a lot of points. Make study/project plans as often as you can.
3. Have a study partner. This can be someone you work with during lunch, or (and this is very important) someone you can Facetime at 1 am when you are struggling to finish your homework. You need someone to pace yourself with and help you stay motivated.
4. Keep a simple planner and calendar. You donât have to be artsy if you donât want toâall it needs to do is keep you aware of your commitments and prevent you from being overwhelmed. I use Google Calendars (sync abilities are great and itâs free) and ToDoist, but MyHomework is another great choice.
5. Be in at least one club/academic extracurricular and one sport throughout the year (they do not have to overlap). This will allow you to meet different groups of people and pursue your interests. Do not join anything that will become more consuming than your schoolwork.
6. AP classes are gross (my personal opinion). In terms of academics and college apps, there are way more important things.
7. Being popular is not important. Everyone has their own groups in reality, and theyâre all as unique and weird as the next. Donât sweat it.
8. Going to parties is overhyped. Itâs not going to make or break your hs experience. But, if thereâs a school-sponsored or team event youâve been invited to, donât miss it.
9. Take mental health days. You will need them, and everyone takes a few. Donât feel embarrassed.
10. If you think there is a serious issue with your schoolâs curriculum and/or policies, speak out about it.
11. If there is ever a point when you feel down as a result of social media, take a break from it.
12. Fashion and/or makeup is less important than your health and happiness. But, if you spend time on either, go you and donât let anyone put you down for it.
13. Make friends with as many of your teachers as you can. It will benefit you (curved grades, extensions, letters of rec, sharing resources, test help, even nicer communications).
14. Sit in the front of the classroom. If you get put in the back, email the teacher about not being able to see the board and they will probably move you up. It will increase your motivation tenfold.
15. Try to read your assigned reading books, but Sparknotes is your friend.
16. Always be honest with yourself about your capabilities. If you havenât finished reading a textbook chapter and the packet for it is due tomorrow, the packet is the most important.
17. Sign up for Brainly, it gives you free homework answers. Also, ALWAYS use Slader (esp. for math). Itâs a lifesaver.
18. Donât hang out with people who only want to talk to you for homework help/answers.
19. Â Do not stuff your backpack full of stuff. Keep it light and comfortable, and only carry essentials.
20. Keep at least a few of your middle school friends. Youâll want a few people who knew you when you were younger that can have the benefit of shared life experiences (and an appreciation for how much you have grown).
21. Do not rely on your locker for much anymore (no need to decorate it). Most high schools have lockers that are more of a burden to get to than they are helpful. A few rarely-used backup supplies are okay.
22. Have a make-friends tool in your backpack: something you can share to make people like you. Itâs a little mercenary but itâll help bridge the awkward gap between âhiâ and âcan you help me with homeworkâ or âwant to hang out?â I use a pack of gum even though I donât chew it.
23. ALWAYS have a few tampons/pads on hand (in backpack or in locker). YES, THIS APPLIES TO BOYS/PEOPLE OF ALL SEXES. You may not need them for yourself, but everyone should have the tools to support your menstruating friends. Itâs not uncool, and its not something to hide. Be there for people who forgot to bring supplies (which is very uncomfortable) or people who canât afford them at the moment!
24. A great place to check for study resources are your school and local libraries. My local library pays for an amazing one-on-one online tutor service that is available to all card-holders.
25. On another note, make friends with the librarian(s). Mine still gets my name wrong, but I can stay late almost every day.
26. There is a high likelihood you textbook has either been scanned by your teacher or is available elsewhere online. Download it so youâre never stuck without one again.
27. DO NOT MAKE YOURSELF CARRY YOUR TEXTBOOK AROUND WITH YOU. Take pictures, scan, etc.
28. Donât be stingy about sharing homework assistance, but donât let others exploit you.
29. Listen to music in the hallways. It helps.
30. Always carry a water bottle with you. Drink more than you think you need every day.
31. Also carry in hot chocolate/tea/coffee to make yourself feel better. Treat yourself during the school days.
32. Football games are pretty fun (coming from someone who barely went to them out of anxiety), so just go even if youâre alone. But whatâs even more fun? Going to a less popular sportâs game your friend is playing in.
33. Do spirit week. Why not? Thereâs nothing cool about skipping it.
34. Download the Forest app to put aside your phone when you study.
35. Listening to music while you study is not always a bad thing. If it makes you feel like a badass, youâre more likely to get stuff done than you would be without it. Itâs ok for it to have lyrics! Do you.
36. Itâs ok to be late to school sometimes. But if you are, at least go get yourself some Starbucks (and maybe bring something for your teacher so they soften up to you).
37. Look out for younger students, even if it just means driving them to a sports conference once a semester.
38. Develop a coping habit (esp. if you have mental illnesses outside of worries about school). Something my therapist once told me is to always carry something that satisfies each of your five senses to calm yourself down (earbuds for music, a tasty back-up snack, a potpourri or scented something in your backpack, pictures of your friends or a journal, and something soft or fidgety).
39. Thereâs nothing wrong with skipping a class a few times in the year.
40. Backup or always write your notes on an iPad or computer if you have one. Not only is it great for the environment, but they will always be with you. Homework is another good thing to do online as much as you can.
41. If your teacher hands out homework on paper, ask if they ever accept it online. Many are flexible on this point.
42. The answer to life, the universe, and everything.
43. Donât take your homework more seriously than it needs to be. For example, if you know one of your teachers only glances at your written work in a âcompletionâ grade style, accuracy and depth are less important. Donât overwork yourself if you can grasp the material.
44. Donât shame others or yourself for not doing homework, getting a bad grade, failing a class, being in a non-honors class, or anything similar. Shame gets you nowhere. Offer support to others is appropriate, and push yourself to do as best as you can. Let everything else slide off you like water.
45. You will encounter bullies, bigots, and jerks in every school. Do not be afraid to report them. Additionally, if their behavior does not change (although I do not think a second chance is always necessary in certain situations), go to your counselor and ask to switch sections. I did this and changing to a new group of peers was a great choice for my mental well-being.
46. Do studying at school, your local library, public center, park, or at your friendâs house. Being in your own space can give you a lot of distractions sometimes, and being away from your parents can help you focus a lot more.
47. You will have obnoxious teachers. Sometimes you will need to play by their obnoxious rules to pass. Do not let them break your stride.
48. Have at least one upperclassman friend if you are an underclassman. You might need a person who can give you advice or drive you around once in a while.
49. Try to make the little things in every day fun by being mindful or paying attention to details. The class snake in the back of the bio lab is actually pretty cute, and the snickers bar you got from the vending machine is delicious.
50. Do not let people tell you that you can just magically feel better or âturn that frown upside-downâ when school gets bad or you have a particularly awful day. The things that happen to you for six hours every weekday will have an effect on you, and it is ignorant to think you can just close the door on that stress, anxiety, or depression when the final bell rings. You must make a conscious effort to struggle through with the very best health, satisfaction, and successes that you can manage.
The education system has a way of breaking students down mentally and emotionally without actually teaching them much in the process. You will learn to hate it because of this. I meanâbalancing sleep, social life, and academic success when science implies only two can be handled at once? Find some reason that is unique to yourself that gives you a reason (other than the government makes me) to get out of bed and learn a bit every day. Keep going :)
Tips for studying with ADD
I have been dealing with ADD since forever. Through all those years in school Iâve learnt a few things that help me study and keep my grades good.
đź Have 2 things to focus on
This might sound a bit odd but you have to distract yourself a little bit. Sitting down to a book, in a complete silence wonât help at all. Youâll find something else no matter how empty the room may be. Give yourself two things to focus on instead. The first thing is studying and the second should be something that doesnât cost you too much thinking. Here are a few ideas for your second focus:
Have something simple in your hand to roll it around (e.g. a stone)
Music with no lyrics
A piece of paper to fold
A pencil or pen to play with
A ball to throw around
A calm pet (the calm part is important, no cat chasing!)
đź Try to study alone
Other poeple will not only distract you but you will aslso distract them too.
đź Turn off your phone
đź Switch between the subjects often
Study one thing for some time, then other thing and then come back to the first thing. Change things up as often as your memory can take it to keep your brain intrigued.
đź Change study spaces
đź Give yourself time to stare into space blankly
đź Ask someone to snap you back
Ask someone to check on you and snap you back to reality in case you lose attention
đź Learn in as many forms as you can
Try things out (if itâs safe to do so), hear them, look at pictures.
đź Give yourself enough time
Donât wait until the last minute. Give yourself as much time as you can.
I hope I helped and have a nice day!
Studying from home
A lot of us have our schools closed now and I bet you get just as much homework as I do. I get sick often so I know how to work from home, however I see a lot of other student struggle. Thatâs why I bring you a little guide to studying from home:
Create a schedule -I know that suddenly there is very little structure to your time, so you have to make one yourself. Create to-do lists and plans the day before
Create a morning routine that keeps you productive -Do not stay in your pyjamas all day, get out of bed and have a good breakfast. Those are the basics, then you can get creative
Keep your sleep schedule reasonable -Of course you can wake up later than you would to school but donât get too excited. Try to go to bed before 11 and wake up before 9
Create a study space -Have your books at hand, pens ready and try to clean up a bit. Clean and organised spaces are a lot less distracting and stressful.
Eliminate distractions -Ask people living with you to let you study, turn off your socials, let someone change the netflix password
Plan things out -If you have a journal, use it. If you donât just write things down on paper. Make sure you see clearly whatâs done, what isnât and you know all the deadlines
Donât forget about breaks -As I said before, nobody is giving your life structure now. You have to schedule your own breaks
Call your friends -I know itâs not the same as a good study session but right now itâs better not to meet in groups. Use the advantages technology brings you and call your friends
3 tasks a day is enough -Try to prioritise in a way that you have 3 bigger task for a day and thatâs it. Donât make your to do lists impossibly long nor lazy short
Think about dividing work -If you get a huge project and due is in two days (like we did) plus tons of other homework, talk to your friends or classmates and divide work. Each of you can do a part!

hello!! as an online college student, iâve been lucky enough to already have some experience with online schooling, so iâm here to offer all my advice for the students of quarantined schools! due to the covid-19 outbreak, itâs been very difficult for many whoâve had to switch to online school. however, there are many way to make it simpler and faster, and iâm here to give my best tips!!
firstly, make a list. whether youâre more comfortable with a physical to-do list or a virtual calendar to schedule things out (iâve used google calendar almost my whole life but i just got the app elisi and itâs beautiful, minimalist, and easy to use! available on pretty much every device). planning out your work is the most efficient way to get it done.
donât try to do everything at once. while itâs best to get things done soon, space out your work efficiently so you donât feel overwhelmed!
create a simple, comfortable study space. it doesnât have to be a perfectly organized desk or gorgeous setup at the kitchen table; i do all of my college work from my bed with a comfy throw blanket and fairy lights up. the most important thing is that you are in the right position to do work, you are comfortable, and that you are able to keep everything you need close to you.
work in chunks. to best knock out your work, take it an hour at a time with 10 to 15 minute breaks in between. make some tea, get a snack, stay energized.
drink lots of water. you are not immune to the coronavirus. itâs also easier to stay energized and focused when youâre hydrated.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR INSTRUCTORS. at first i was very timid to communicate back and forth with my professors when something was wrong but i have learned that it is the most important thing to have good communication. if you donât understand a concept, have trouble with the online system, or just need general help in your academics, sending them an email is the best way to solve the problem.
reward yourself!! once youâve finished an assignment, give yourself a little treat (maybe a half hour of minecraft or your favorite snack to munch on!!)âitâs the best way to encourage your mind to work harder.
donât work too late. youâre off from school. unless itâs the night of the due date, donât push yourself until itâs done. the morning is just a sleep away.
these are some good playlists for background music.
another important tip! communicate with your classmates in case you donât understand something. everybody learns differently and some pick up info different than others.Â
make fancy notes!! get fancy with your stationery!! you have plenty of time now and can go bonkers with your beautiful notes.
continue to check your temperature and monitor symptoms. your school has closed for a reason. your safety and health are important.
retain a relatively normal sleep schedule, similar to the one you have when you normally go to school. slipping out of your regular sleep cycle can and will kick your ass when itâs time to go back.
lastly, eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. take a nap when youâre tired. remember to go to the bathroom and keep your water filled. take care of yourself.
if i think of anything else to add, i will!! just wanted to bring forth my advice in hopes that it benefits anybody who is at home b/c of quarantine or school cancellation :)

Here is a list of some YouTube ASMR ambiences/soundscapes (theyâre all hyperlinked, so click away!) Unlike traditional ASMR, these videos do not feature any people. Talented YouTubers have used software to create rendered environments with layered sounds, with many of these ambiences inspired from fantasy to others based in reality. I find music with lyrics to be distracting sometimes, but these are great background noises for focusing, studying, doing homework, and even for relaxing. Enjoy and good luck âĄ

Hi, guys! Lala here. We all know the importance of having a morning and night routine, but I havenât seen a lot of people talking about having a study routine. So I wanted to share mine with you and hopefully you guys can get some value out of it.Â
Do you have a study routine too or want to share some tips? Share them with me!Â
productivity while working from home
hi all! i hope everyoneâs been well and healthy. if youâre like me, switching to online classes & working from home is not always easy â here are some tips to still be productive while working from home!
1. do your best to stick to your normal routine. this includes eating normally, sleeping normally, etc. - do your best to do what you have been doing before isolating. there are already enough changes in your life with school or work⌠you donât need to stress your mind & body out more by changing your sleeping and eating habits!
2. donât work in your bed. i know itâs tempting⌠but donât do it. even if you go to your living room or desk, you are more likely to feel like you are in your normal routine. working in bed was never a good idea before, and it still isnât. donât. do. it.
3. attend all lectures - even if they are optional. on zoom (or on most other video chat sites that your professor/teacher may use) you can literally turn off your video â this way, even if you have bedhead and are looking a bit rough you can still go to class. but seriously - going to class is 10x easier now. get the most out of your classes and education and attend your lectures.
4. PRIORITIZE. YOUR. HEALTH. the whole reason we are not in school/at work right now is to stay healthy!! pay extra attention to your hygeine and donât leave your house. if you feel sick, email your professors and ask for extensions. just be extra conscious of your health needs during the pandemic.Â
5. get dressed! even if you are changing from pajamas into leggings and a tshirt, try to get dressed in the morning. studies have shown that putting on regular pants before working from home increases productivity. at the very least, change into different pajamas (for hygeine purposes).
6. take advantage of your new routine! a lot of professors are doing pre-recorded lectures, meaning you can watch them any time you want. do this and your work whenever you are most productive⌠do you work best in the morning? grind out your lectures then. can you focus more in the afternoon? perfect.. do your work then! either way, see this as an opportunity to work when you want & at your own pace.
7. take walks & spend time outside. please remember to social distance, but spending time in your backyard or on a walk (especially if you live in a more isolated area) is crucial. your body is probably used to getting a certain amount of steps & sunlight every day, so do your best to give it the nutrients and exercise it needs.Â
8. keep daily lists. with such an unstructured environment, it can be hard to remember done everything you need to do. every day, make a list of things you hope to accomplish (donât make it too long) and make sure everything is checked off by the end of the day.
9. donât be upset with yourself if you struggle. this is a difficult time for all of us, for many different reasons. we will all experience some sort of disruption in our work. just pick yourself back up and keep going.
10. donât be afraid to reach out to your professors. they are just an email away, and more often than not, are happy to help you in whatever you need. if youâre having trouble with the new structure of the class, or are confused about the class in general, they are more often than not happy to help.
if any of you need anything at this time, donât hesitate to reach out to me x
