inej: there’s no debate, she’s a cat person. she loves the way they move so stealthily and being told she has black cat energy is like the biggest compliment to her. imo when she was younger and still with her family it was common to see stray cats while travelling so she became attached to tons of them when she fed them. i imagine she also sees them as sacred and names them after saints.

kaz: honestly i think kaz could go either way, but overall he’s a cat person purely because they’re quieter and more self sufficient which he likes. however i 100% believe he had a sheep dog back at his family farm when he was young which he adored so he does have a soft spot.

jesper: 𝗀̶𝗈̶𝖺̶𝗍̶ dog person imo. he loves big energetic dogs because they constantly match his energy BUT when wylan comes home one day with a kitten he can be seen sitting dead still on the sofa with the little tabby curled in his lap.

wylan: i really think wylan loves both. i imagine he’s just overall an animal lover and is always known as the one who’s good with animals. he’s the relative you find sat in the corner with the house pet at every family function.

matthias: EDIT* ok this one’s more complicated bc i think he def has respect for cats bc they don’t rely on anyone. BUT i think ive been convinced by peoples responses and would concede he’s a dog person. i still hold that he was a little disappointed by the difference between wolves and domesticated dogs. specifically ofc he loves huskys since they remind him of home.

nina: i get this feeling that she’s lowk not too gone on either. like she’ll be down to stroke both for a bit and she thinks they’re cute but she wouldn’t go crazy over them. i get this feeling she’s a bit of a horse girl bc she love show strong and like majestic they are.

okay so I feel that I've only recently been able to appreciate the difference between Kaz and Inejs response to their specific trauma.

For example in the books it sort of appears that Kaz has a stronger touch aversion - likely because skin to skin contact stimulates the memory of his brothers death and the way he was forced to deal with that situation. Inej does open up to Kaz about how she understands that feeling because her trauma still has impact on her, but we see that it doesn't show in the same way as Kaz.

When I first read the books I wondered if this was to do with her having found a way to overcome her trauma whilst Kaz hadn't yet got there, and while I still do thing she is positioned as further in her journey to recovering in comparison to Kaz, I also think theres more to it.

Kaz has a direct touch aversion - so any skin to skin contact is intensely difficult for him, which we see them begin to work through slowly at the end of crooked kingdom. I believe that over the years following crooked kingdom, they would have definitely made progress with their journey individually and together. This for Kaz could hopefully lead to him being able to have skin to skin contact without the panic attacks / breakdowns he had previously (even if just with a trusted person like Inej this would be a huge milestone in recovery)

However, for Inej IF (very big if bc this isn't necessary to their relationship its just a possibility) they ever got to a point of intimacy (not specifically sleeping together but even just kissing etc) I think this would show to be heavier on Inej than previous contact.

I think due to her trauma stemming from being r@ped and s3xually exploited, her responses would be more extreme in s3xual situations. We may begin to see trauma responses similar to Kaz's early ones when they got to those points (breakdowns, panic attacks, throwing up etc).

This is probably something everyone else understood and I just didnt clock it but I thought it was interesting and added a lot of depth to their individual journeys that Leigh worked so hard to create.

UNDOUBTEDLY the coolest book ever these little additions are actually my pride and joy i love them
