hi anon!! i don’t clean up my sketches, it just feels like continuous polishing but i generally don’t do clean line art unless that’s the style i’m going for ^^ i love the energy of sketches and a lot of my current art style depends on the roughness and brokenness and variation of the lines.

a lot of this is carried over from being a pencil and ink artist - and my tendency to leave parts of my art uncolored is carried over from my watercolor background, where you leave the paper white for the brightest highlights. it’s part of the “messiness” or “sketchy” / “undone” feeling i have in my digital art as well!

thank you 🥹 <33 “without making them look like flat twinks” is taking me out but ikwym and it’s ok too if that’s what you’re going for ^^ ! my quickest, easiest advice though is to address the face shape, which makes a huge difference—try broadening the jaw and squaring the chin a bit more.

and my best advice would be to study stylization that you like - in my case, when i started, i studied/copied a lot of Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye and Kris Anka’s Bucky Barnes comic panels. then when i was in kpop fandom, i was always referring to photos of the members so I had a ton of references to stylize—it made me pay attention to face shapes, eye shapes, noses, chins, eyebrows, lips, etc, all of which also helps to avoid same face syndrome and makes for a varied visual library. in terms of satosugu, i always have my refs open to the source itself (jjk manga panels) bc i love the way Gege draws them. for expressions, i love looking at Ami Thompson’s character sheets, specifically those of the Spiderverse characters.

whenever i’m feeling art blocked or dissatisfied, i copy (for my personal practice, ofc) a work of an artist whose style i love, and then i try to draw something else in that style i learned while it’s still “fresh.”
