I personally find the former lawyer, Jincey, who now works in the porn industry a very interesting character in the film. As a director and a lawyer, she seems to know exactly how to create “realistic” fantasies for audiences since she understands the nuances of the human mind. Catching her tell the girls what to say, do, etc and what not to do was particularly interesting throughout the film.

From a technical aspect, I found this to be the more interesting and almost voyeuristic to a certain extent. Considering that this was a film about porn and that too, six hours long, with only 24 hours to see it — I found this to be a way that viewers could choose and control what they wanted to see in the short time span they'd gotten. Considering the subject matter, it worked well as I knew which scenes I wanted to avoid watching.Â
Personally, my stance on the porn is that I am against it. I personally feel like it creates unrealistic expectations for men and women. It is also too available to children and can distort their outlook on sex; since images can be extremely powerful. Porn also makes sex into an extremely animalistic action devoid of the emotion that comes with it. Overtime, I feel as if sex has become into the fulfilling of desires — with whomever and whatever — rather than being a fulfilling aspect of a healthy relationship.
Porn has also changed drastically since the introduction of the Internet. Porn stars have become “live” and though not physically there, they provide a “realness” to their sexual behaviour that isn't actually happening. This short term stimulation can create a false sense of control that is actually creating a porn addiction epidemic. If you Youtube or Google porn addiction, that shit is real. And it affects millions of people worldwide.
This film however, shows a glimpse into the lives of women who are usually objectified by their voyeurs. The women shown have names, histories and real relationships that they talk about. I found the raw aspects of the film particularly fascinating (Ex: scenes of Nic's relationship with her girlfriend).

A Literary Documentary of the Life of Karen Carpenter, Available for free on googlebooks. Sad, yet incredibly interesting read. The foreword by Dionne Warwick is gripping. Strongly recommend taking a look at it. Below is a link to the book.

Mine was: Lizzie McGuire Season 2 Episode 8 “INNER BEAUTY”Â
Aired 30,August,2002 Production Code 208 Miranda has a misconceived notion that she is fat and begins to skip meals to look slim for a music video directed by Gordo. Miranda begins to develop an eating disorder and Lizzie and Gordo are concerned about it. However, in the end Lizzie convinces Miranda to be comfortable with her body and persuades her to stop dieting.
I remember watching this episode on television and having something inside of me switch. I started dancing when I was 3, and grew up as a member of a professional dance company. I was 10 when I watched this episode and this was honestly my favourite show, so I felt like I knew Lizzie and Miranda. I resonated with Miranda’s fear of how she looked in preparation for a performance, and this is where I got the idea to start skipping meals. In dance culture, I was constantly surrounded by eating disorders, but before watching this television show I had been ignorant to it. I’m not saying Lizzie McGuire was the reason I developed an eating disorder, there were many other aspects that fed into that and they came from many different vessels. But, I am saying looking back, this is the first medium of gaining information about eating disorders I could remember. And I think this is just one example of the seeds that are planted everyday in the least expected places.Â
Very interesting that so many others share the same experience I did. I developed an eating disorder in middle school, around 7th grade to 8th grade. This show was my first exposure to what an eating disorder was. And like Lauren said, though I can't blame the show it was interesting how the exposure was in one of my favourite shows growing up. I also found it interesting how much discussion around eating disorders was created during this time, in magazines, in books, etc.

Joshua Oppenheimer's account of the anti-communist purge in 60s Indonesia was overlooked by the Academy, but the director remains upbeat about a film that has made a genuine difference

Errol Morris's article for The Slate about The Act of Killing. Definitely an article worth reading — written in a typical Errol Morris style.
"The Act of Killing is truly unlike any other documentary film. A good thing in my opinion. One of the extraordinary things about documentary is that you get to continually reinvent the form, reinvent what it means to make a documentary—and Oppenheimer did just that. He identified several of the killers from 1965 and convinced them to make a movie about the killings. But the film is even weirder than that. Oppenheimer convinced these killers to act in a movie about the making of a movie about the killings. There would be re-enactments of the murders by the actual perpetrators. There would be singing, and there would be dancing. A perverted hall of mirrors.
But there is method to Oppenheimer’s madness—the idea that by re-enacting the murders, he, the viewers of the movie, and the various perpetrators recruited to participate could become reconnected to a history that had nearly vanished into a crepuscular past. Oppenheimer has the optimistic thought that the past is inside us and can be brought back to life."
One of the most beautiful and chilling scenes in the film was the one portrayed on the film poster. The colours, the background and the worn-down fish structure all speak volumes about Oppenheimer's vision for The Act of Killing.

Free men
Multiple times throughout the film, Congo and many other perpetrators refer to gangsters as being "free men." Taking note of this, it is interesting how this idea is used to justify murderous acts and essentially take away the freedom of thousands of others. In its most basic form however, "The Act of Killing" provided an incredibly raw and gruesome look into the minds of anyone affected and blinded by extreme ideologies.
"I had a screening for this film for prison guards once in Denmark, and it was really interesting — they put words to something that we, as filmmakers, must do whenever we look at another human being. They said, we always try to separate the crime from the person."
