Sure they work as independ pieces of art with their stories, themes and stuff. But you cannot divorce them. IMO you shouldn't watch the utena movie without watching the series first, the same way you shouldn't play Deltarune unless you're at least very very familiar with Undertale. They go hand in hand, even if they're retellings or reboots of the original story, the original story still matters.

And in-universe, I think both happen on the same timeline. I do think that AOE happens in a new revolution of the timeloop, and I do think that Deltarune happens ... somewhere before(?) Undertale. They're not the same world, some characters are completely different. But it's the same consistent outer unvierse and greater story. They co-exist, not compete to see which game is better or which retelling of the duels is canon.

AND some characters are aware of their multi-unvierse scandals. YES I AM COMPARING ANTHY WITH SANS. They both remember (or rather, they don't forget) abt their past lives, they know that their worlds are connected to some other version of the world, where the same thing happens but differently, and they both are hopeless for reaching a different outcome (Anthy until she saw Utena in the movie and Sans is very open about going numb over his want to "go back").

Susie and Undyne are both mentored by Gerson, so they're both strong and brave and full of hope for their people.
