that comeback did not make any sense at all, but leo looked affronted nevertheless. “i—whatever, nadia, i’m fucking stuck,” he kept on trying to tug his arm free, to no avail. the longer his whole-ass arm was stuck inside the vending machine, the more dreaded he felt. “nadia, don’t fucking laugh!” he was fully panicking now, aggressively pushing at the vending machine with his free arm, subsequently grimacing at the pain, “oh my god, it hurts, is my arm—am i—what if we have to cut my arm off?”

“if i spend one more second in this godforsaken hotel room, i think i might lose my mind. the shining style,” nadia huffed as she kicked off the sheets and swung her legs over the side of the bed. she wasn’t one to shy away from snowed-in-sex, but there was only so much she could take before she went a little stir crazy. “come on, let’s break out of here. do you think the alarm will sound if we take the back exit ?” 

hazel could have corrected nadia on that, but… she suspected that it would only invite follow-up questions and even if she knew better than her friend, she didn’t exactly know-know. it was just one of those terms. after a moment’s pause she landed on, “yeah, that’s totally a thing. i actually wanted to be a voice actor when i was little, like for cartoons.” one of those childhood dreams that she’d never actually pursued beyond just doing crazy voices for her brothers. “uh huh… so, do you think someone stole it?” she asked, still a bit lost, much like that elusive shampoo bottle. “are you sure you didn’t put it in the fridge again?”

“oh. my. god.” she grinned at the thought of it — hazel would make a surprisingly good voice over actor, nadia felt pretty sure of it. “i could totally see it. we should like, send your resume to cartoon network. do you have a resume ? wait — do voice actors even need a resume ? ” she questioned curiously. nadia furrowed her brow in thought, slowly beginning to shake her head. “i didn’t look there, actually. but that makes more sense than a shampoo thief.” 

leo gaped at nadia, bristling at the insult. “i’m not small,” he retorted, but shuffled towards the vending machine anyway. he handed nadia his own bag of doritos that he’d gotten from the same machine, eyeing her pointedly. “you’ve got shit luck, dude,” he said, before turning to examine the machine. the cheetos bag was stubbornly dangling by the metal spring, but it looked easily retrievable. crouching down, leo slowly slid his hand up the chute, managing to dislodge the bag. “there you go!” he said happily once nadia’s bag of flaming hot cheetos fell with a hefty ‘plop’. with his mission done, leo tried pulling his arm back, but it wouldn’t budge. another tug. for five seconds, he thrashed about with reckless abandon, but the pulling and tugging brought pain to his arm, and his head whipped around to look at nadia, wild-eyed. “i’m stuck.”

“surprise !” nadia grinned, holding up a gift box in which she’d attempted to wrap nicely, but had ended up using far too much tape in all the wrong places. “i’m your secret santa. and, let me tell you, keeping that a secret was not easy. do you know how many times i almost told you on accident ?” she said, offering him the box. in it was a two-picture frame with an old photo she’d dug up of the two of them as tweens along with a couple other campers, standing in the middle of the ice rink of the winter sports camp they’d attended back in middle school, as well as one of the more embarrassing and cringe-worthy emails they’d sent to one another with their fairly mortifying old email names on display.

“there,” nadia steps back to admire her work, two perfectly drawn on black rectangles under either one of aylie’s eyes, as she snapped the cap back onto her liquid eyeliner. dressed in black from head to toe, she grabbed the knit black beanie from out of her bag and completed her own look by pulling it on over her head. “we look stealthy as fuck. there’s no way the cameras will recognize us,” she grins as she reaches for aylie’s hand to pull her toward the mirror so the two of them could examine themselves.

                   when ian was nothing but a wide-eyed fourteen-year-old,   filled with angst and dreams of someday having his own apartment to live away from the suffocating rigidness of his childhood home,    not once did he consider the very real threat of the people he’d meet in the future turning against him.

as he’s staring at nadia eating the last of the takis that ian purposely hid from roman the day before,   sat proudly on their counter,   he wants to go back in time to tell his fourteen-year-old-self that hey,   it’s not so fantastic over here in the future and to go the fuck to sleep.   

“   this is we why broke up,   ”    ian says as he reaches his hand into the bag,   only to find that there are only broken pieces of takis and chili dust left behind.   still,   he takes a pinch of what he can get.   as he walks by into the kitchen to see what else he can fill his cravings with,   he licks it off his fingers and can’t help but feel betrayed by little ian who got his older self’s hopes up so high.

“   first callie took the doritos,   and now you’re eating the takis.   i was looking forward to those,   you know ?   when will these crimes end ?   ”

the very mention of a snow-in made nadia a bit stir crazy. stuck in a hotel ? in the middle of winter ? with the same people she saw every day ? it sounded too much like that one horror film, and if brad went crazy and ended up killing them all, she’d be the first to scream i told you so ! 

which was exactly why she was living every day like it was her last. she’d actually been avoiding ian’s room like the plague once she knew it was also where harper was sleeping, but in a desperate attempt to keep her sanity, she’d gone in search of ian or leo, neither of which seemed to be around. but what was around, miraculously, was that beautiful, glossy, royal purple bag that caught her eye — an uneaten, unopened bag of takis. 

sat on the edge of the bed, fingers stained an unnatural color of red, scrolling through her phone with her free hand, she jumped up in surprise at the sound of an unexpected voice. letting out a sigh of relief as soon as she realized who it was, she offered him a sheepish smile. “sorry...but you shouldn’t leave takis unattended. rookie move.” she replies, licking off the excess dust from her index finger. 

“aylie and i are gonna try and steal some liquor from brad’s office later,” she adds, falling back onto the mattress, “i’ll repay you with a drink of your choice.”

“oh my fucking god,” nadia groaned as she slammed her fist against the vending machine, which had eaten yet another one of her dollars, the bag of flaming hot cheetos still stuck on the silver metal ring, hanging by the corner of the bag. “leo,” she turned to the other with a serious look on her face, “you’re smaller. i need you to reach in and grab those cheetos,” she said, cocking her head to the side, offering her best attempt at a polite smile, “pleeease.” 

“yeah you got me. good old evelyn sherman,” she admitted, saying the woman’s name in an imitation of her dreaded high-pitched voice. hazel would never understand why those people were frequent visitors, but at this point she’d chalked it up to the lord testing her. and it was testing her, alright. “maybe we should, we’ve all fantasized about it,” she agreed, only a little less casual as nadia. then she shot a highly quizzical look at the back of nadia’s head, “how on earth did you manage to lose your shampoo?”

“wow,” nadia turned her head to look at hazel, clearly impressed, “that’s a good impression,” she said, returning back to her position, “you should be like...an impressionist. those are a thing right?” with an audible sigh, the brunette shrugged her shoulders in response. “i bought a new one. i put it in the shower,” she explained, “and then, before i even had the chance to use it, it was gone. like, nowhere-to-be-found gone. and like,” she furrowed her eyebrows, “there’s really not many places in the apartment it could be hiding.”

“… anyway, i told her i couldn’t just turn down the heat in the sauna, and she screamed at me. so i had to go in and manually book every. single. slot. for the whole week to keep her out of here,” she said with a shrug and returned her attention to braiding nadia’s hair. maybe she had gotten a bit too into her story and messed it up along the way but, fixable. “i think it was a public service, personally — what do you put in your hair? it’s so nice.”

“did she have short brown hair ? a momager hair cut ?” nadia asked curiously, tilting her head back to look at hazel. “because i definitely know exactly who you’re talking about,” she said with a sigh as she returned her head upright so hazel could continue with the braid. “maybe we should just kill her,” she says it casually — her voice so indifferent you wouldn’t really be able to tell if she was serious or kidding. “really ? i’ve been using callie’s shampoo and conditioner cause i lost mine — don’t ask how.” she admits, “but thank you. i’ll tell callie you say so !”
