-After the piano quartet finished. Breccia let out a light laugh before sighing as she got off the piano, taking the chance to quickly massage Clays shoulder, who scrunched up slightly and failed to shake the talons away as she continued
“Well that was a beautiful little song, Clay! But I think I’ll be doing something actually interesting now!” Breccia stated as she began walking away, with her tail seeming to “accidentally” smack Muds talons as she went away, before then signaling her
“Escort me out, you touchy twig.” Breccia commanded, and just before Mud could speak in protest, Breccia raised her talon up alongside her voice, “You may be my Fiances guard, but are still a guard! If I command you to come over here, you come over here!” Mud then slowly went over, as Breccia walked out of the library with Mud behind them, before turning around and patting her on the head.
“Good girl.” Breccia said with a smirk, as Muds scales flared for a moment, as though they were resisting the urge to become pure blood red.
“Oh! Before I leave, Clay, try to wear something nice later, I’m thinking of us going somewhere tonight!” Breccia shouted towards Clay, as she leaves
-As this happens, Obsidian pulled Clay from the piano and began going around the library, as Clay became curious about something
“If the mudwings hold so much knowledge…how come everyone thinks we’re idiots?” Clay asked genuinely, as Obsidian let out a massive sigh
“You can chock that up to those misinformed dopes called Nightwings! Some idiot took a second observation, and decided he was the ultimate expert on Mudwings! And every tribe believed him because Nightwings are SOOOOOOOO snart and powerful, well you know what? I bet I’m smarter than every Nightwing combined, and I bet those powers of theirs are completely made up, in fact, I think I have some proof for that- Wait a sec! You know a Nightwing, don’t ya?” Obsidian asked, as she turned to Clay with curious eyes
“Yeah, Starflight. I honestly think you two could get along-”
“Does he have mind powers?” Obsidian interrupted, looking into Clays eyes, likely to see if there was any hint of him lying in his next response.
“…Um, no, at least not that we know of-”
“I KNEW IT! THOSE SMOKE BREATH BABIES ARE A BUNCH OF FRAUDS!” Obsidian exclaimed, as she began pacing around
“I’m pretty sure it’s just him though, really!”
“I doubt it, if it was he’d probably just start lying about it to feel better about himself.” Obsidian joked, though it was clear she meant it
“Starflight’s not like that! He’s practically like my brother.” Clay said in his defense
“To you, maybe, but to him you’re probably just somebody he can throw at people, probably feels the same about the other dragonets as well. It’s just a fact about Nightwings, they only like other Nightwings, and even then that usually depends if they can extort something out of them. I mean really, if he cared about ya, why’d he never do anything for you?” Obsidian asked, as Clay felt a little annoyed, and he saw Mud on the side have a look of slight annoyance as well
“I’ll have you know Starflight cares a lot about us! In fact he particularly cares about Sunny, a SANDWING.” Clay said to Obsidian, hoping that’d make her apologize, but she proceeded to just double down
“Ah yeah, the sandwing, I actually heard about her in a report Mire got from Moorhen about the incident at Scarlets! And I’m sorry, but don’t ya think she’s completely off? I’ve studied Sandwings, and she looks barely anything like one! I mean, the sails off, the scales are off, the tales off, even the eyes. GREEN if I might add…just saying, we know another certain tribe with green eyes, maybe that’s why shortsight, or whatever his name is, likes her.” Obsidian said, as Clay got even more annoyed with her, though noticed Glory give a slight shrug to it, and tried to brush that off.
He hadn’t been the nicest about Sunnys appearance in his mind, but he wasn’t gonna just let someone belittle her just for her not being a “perfect” Sandwing.
“All of my friends had green eyes, you gonna say she’s a sea-sand-rain-night thing?” Clay asked, clearly trying to be sarcastic and hopefully make Obsidian back off on the subject, but she instead laughed it off and continued.
“Point taken! Still have doubts about that Nightwing though. Or that Sandwing, in a best case scenario it just seems like two losers on the genetic lotteries, and worst case scenario they really are just some fakes and letdowns, which I’m personally leaning towards-” Before Obsidian could finish, Clay blew up at her
“STOP IT, THREE MOONS…Just stop, I’m sorry, but you’re just being insanely insensitive, Obsidian. You really got on my nerves there, so can we just talk about something else?” Clay asked her, as Obsidian seemed to slightly hold back tears, before taking her goggles off and wiping them, before putting them back on.
“I should…I’m gonna leave.” Obsidian said, as she had a mix of emotions on her face before walking out, with Clay being able to hear her claws against the ground as she rushed to what he assumed was her room.
Clay attempted to go after her, to either apologize or at least make her see his side of things, but as he went out of the library and began passing through the hall, he was suddenly stopped by a sharp but calm voice.
“What are you doing?” was what Clay heard, as he turned and saw Cocoa, perched on a desk, her eyes glaring down on him like a hawk glares down on a mouse.
“Oh, I was going after Obsidian.”
“What did you do?”
“Well I got a little upset at her for something she said about my friends, and she took it bad when I told her to stop. I just want to clear things up.”
“You seriously think she’d want to talk to you after you made her run off??? Obsidian’s way too petty to just hear someone explain themself.” Cocoa told him, clearly giving the impression that she thinks he’s an idiot.
“It was just a small thing, I doubt she’ll seriously be that upset over it!” Clay said, before then stopping in place as he saw Cocoas destroyed wings again, and Cocoa immediately noticed and scowled
“Like I said, you clearly don’t know my sister. First you piss off my Bigwings, now my little sister, honestly shocked you haven’t managed to make Breccia angry yet.” Cocoa berated him, and Clay was feeling worse and worse by the word.
-Cocoa almost felt bad for her anger, but instead decided to now ask him about things she herself has been curious about.
“…Mud, go outside and guard the door. Now.” Cocoa said as she saw the small guard in the corner of her eye.
“I don’t wish to have the person I’m assigned to guard out of my sight-”
“I am 4th in line of the Mud Kingdom, and you put a spear to my Bigwings throat. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll stand guard, outside, now.” Cocoa commanded, as Mud seemed to hold back saying something mocking under her breath, before leaving.
Cocoa then turned her attention towards Clay, and gestured towards a seat for him to take, and her stern look gave Clay the message
Cocoa then grabbed two pouches that look similar to a sandwings stinger, and tossed one towards Clay as she took a sip from her own, as Clay did the same, feeling a burning and bitter taste in his throat, quickly realizing what kind of drink it was.
“So…”, Cocoa began, as she squeezed the pouch, before staring Clay down, “what happened after you escaped.”
“Huh?”
“When you escaped the palace, unless Scarlet had a plan that involved half her face getting burnt off? Knowing her, I doubt she would or could.” Cocoa told him, as Clay realized this is more akin to a cross examination then a simple recounting
“Oh, well, we went down the river, and we saw the aftermath of a battle between Icewings and Mudwings…it was a lot to see…Then a bit after I met my mom, and that went terrible…soon after, I met Moorhen, and now I’m here.” Clay told her briefly
“Hm, really now? Alright, so, did the Rainwing ditch you before or after your mom gave you a reality check?” Cocoa asked, as Clay completely froze.
Cocoa then grabbed another stinger pouch, and tossed it towards Clay to snap him out of it, with him looking at the pouch in slight disgust, “relax, that one’s juice. Now tell me, what happened to The Rainwing. The reports told us about the seawing, the nightwing, and the little yellow thing, but they didn’t say anything about a rainwing when you got captured, but they DO mention one at the palace, so clearly, something happened. What. Was. It.” Cocoa interrogated, getting closer to Clay as she did so.
“She must have just went invisible! That’s what happened-” Before Clay could continue his lie, Cocoa stared daggers in his eyes, before turning her back around, before then looking down at him oncemore
“Clay, look at me, do you really think I can’t tell when someone is lying to me? When someone is hiding how they really feel? Tell me what happened, or I’ll make what’ll happen to you far worse.” Cocoa said ominously, as Clay gave up, and looked down, before telling the truth.
“…I made her run away…I neglected her, and it hurt her in a way that made her decide she was better off without me…maybe she was right.” Clay admitted, as Cocoas face turned into ones of disgust, which Clay initially believed to be towards his failure, before she then spoke.
“Such an ungrateful rat. Your abilities as a bigwings aside, I know more than enough to know who the problem there was…Tell me Clay, do you miss them?”
“More than anything in the world. They’re my family after all.”
“After that, you still call them family?”
“Of course I do!”
“Well then, let me ask you another question.”
“You sure like asking-”
“Shut up and listen. You want the truth? Your family got ripped from you before you were even born, and these dragonets aren’t close to be enough of a replacement for them.”
“Don’t say that! We care about each other more than anything!”
“Oh really now?! Did the one who abandoned you also care? Is that what you consider, what you consider your sib? What kind of sib doubts the idea that their bigwings loves them? What kind of sib decides to take every little thing out on others because they had it rough? What kind of sib leaves their own behind? For all Autumns faults at least she cares about us, something this rainwing couldn’t do for you!” Cocoa ranted, slamming her talons on the ground and making Clay feel almost like the palace itself shook.
-Cocoa then began to take a deep breath, and turned around and stood still, letting Clay see her back in all its detail, of her wings ruined and practically ripped apart, with parts having healed over but still being clear and prominent. From what remained of the wings however, Clay could tell they used to be large, especially for a mudwing. Clay then noticed many other scars across her back, large claw marks that appeared to have been from an escape of some sorts, and a large black spot upon her leg as though it was burnt in some way
“That’s what happens to sibs who abandon their family, and that’s what they deserve.” Cocoa stated simply, as Clay began to reach out towards her, before stopping himself, and turning away.
“I’ll try to do better now…” was all Clay said as he walked away
-Meanwhile, outside from the entrance, a certain rainwing in disguise slumped against the door with a mix of both shame and anger, and the lingering thought that somehow, Cocoa was right about her.
Cocoa in the meantime walked up the stairs her bigwings built for her towards her room, still thinking of what to do with Clay, since she could tell this wouldn’t be his last little incident, thinking over his story and what he told her, before it finally clicked for her
“Hm, so you want family? I’ll just have to show you that family you want then…” Cocoa said aloud, before continuing up the stairs
