It’s difficult to go about your day and life when the world around you is collapsing. Hell, it feels silly for me to even post this when there is so much pain, hatred, dying. When there seems to be this endless stream of darkness, destruction, disconnect. How can we possibly find joy when there are people fleeing their country out of fear, losing their homes & families, when the earth is burning and our animals are dying b/c of the choices we as humans make? It’s devastating on every level - emotionally, mentally, physically, even existentially - all of us are affected by it whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. It is changing the structures of our bones, our DNA. But we cannot live in a state of continual helplessness, hopelessness, and especially ignorance, this only fuels the mental health crisis we are in. We cannot live in a state of division, this only fuels the ideology of separation that we are not one human race and that one side is better than another. That “out of sight out of mind” mentality.

What can we do? We can recognize how fortunate we are to have access to clean water, clothing, & comfort. We can recognize our privilege, our joys, our rights that so many are not granted. We can recognize that there is power in our prayers, our hands, and we can make a difference in our small corners of the world. That we still have strength in our hearts and when we spread kindness it touches far and wide. When we spread love it touches hearts across borders and bloodlines. When we visualize a better future, the future becomes better because we hold ourselves accountable for that vision to be a standard of how our world should be. So try to think thoughts that are helpful and energetically charged for the good of all. Speak words that are kind and educational. Tell people you can support them or ask for support.

a sense of direction

familiar & mild

I’ll be your eyes

I start my mornings

with warm water & slow kisses,

and it is not lost on me

how lucky it is to wake up

in this way.

I turn on the kettle

with clean water inside of it

& fancy tea to brew,

and it is not lost on me

how fortunate I am

to begin my day

in this way.

I blend my green smoothie

with superfoods from

around the world,

with the electricity

so easily gifted to me,

and it is not lost on me

how easy day to day life is

in this way.

I pause before I get into my car

and look around at this home

I find myself in,

safe, spacious, serene,

with two loyal dogs

& a man who loves me

and it is not lost on me

how not enough humans

get to live their lives

in this way.

It is not lost on me

to observe my privilege

over my problems,

and that it is our job

to help others be able

revel, sweet one.
