Trans girls have a whole secret language made up of noises, and I will not be taking questions at this time. There’s the dramatic huff when your eyeliner won’t cooperate, the soft mmph when you stretch just right, the exasperated ugh when dysphoria decides to be a menace, and of course, the delighted little eep when someone calls you a good girl in just the right tone.
Some of us have perfected the soft, breathy “oh” that makes people weak in the knees, while others have mastered the smug little giggle that says I know exactly what I’m doing. There’s the sing-song “hiii” that can mean anything from I’m feeling cute today to I’m about to cause problems on purpose. And let’s not forget the tiny, involuntary whimper when a pretty girl runs her fingers through your hair and calls you pretty right back.
It’s a whole symphony, an instinctive, sapphic, trans-coded melody of delight, frustration, mischief, and just the right amount of playful desire. Because let’s be real—when you finally get to be yourself, to embrace the voice you always wished was yours, of course you’re going to have fun with it.
