apropos of me getting into a fruitless argument with a “Freddie was bi, he said so in interviews” truther in a TikTok comment section:
It’s so strange to me how no one does this with any other gay celebrity. Elton John originally came out as bisexual. He was engaged to a woman, then married to a different woman. And then he came out as gay and no one argues it. George Michael originally came out as bisexual, has been with women, then came out as gay and no one argues it. It’s an extremely common experience for gay men, especially in a time when the world was not as welcoming.
But with Freddie everyone is “but Mary” “but he said this” “but he never labeled himself.”
Like. The facts are that he explicitly called himself gay in more interviews than in which he alluded to sleeping with women. He had a well-known terrible relationship with the press and seemingly wanted to maintain an air of mystique and likely felt they weren’t entitled to exact details. Very fair. This doesn’t change the fact that everyone close to him maintains that he only ever called himself gay privately, told people he wasn’t bi, and many of them have corrected people who say otherwise (Brian, Crystal, Thor, etc.)
It’s just weird to me how this “no he was bi because past relationships/comments” phenomenon seemingly exists only for Freddie. It’s like people have blinders on
