Trading Faces and Mr. Rippen are my favorite episodes of Season 2. Canāt you tell? Heās such a dorkā¦I love it.
āGood Villain, Bad Heroā I had this idea of a mission where Penn and Rippen accidentally switch roles when zapping to a world, and when they were told what their mission was, theyād do the opposite so that their original side would win~!
Example: Bad guy steals gold, bad guy wins, Good guy steals gold, Bad guy still wins
itās a vice versa thing. so if Penn stole back the gold as the villain, the good guys would win because the town would get their gold back.
I hope I explained it good enough~!
Something we tried to do more of in season 2 was animate assets for the vendor studio to use before they began animating. The strength of a program like Harmony is that once something is animated it can be endlessly tweaked to look different without actually reanimating anything. This was a rough flying cycle I did for Sashi as a parrot in the whale boat world.
some larreva, for the soul.

Here's a weird question. Did Sashi realize that she has feelings for Penn before the finale, or during the finale's montage? Because in Rootilda and Mr. Rippen, it seems too me that she was acting a bit like an overprotective girlfriend.
Sashi and Penn were friends/co-workers who both acted jealously when the other was crushing on other people/plants/dragonsāthis was established in both seasons 1 and 2, if you lookā though romance and crushes was never the focus of the show ā not even close.
Iām not gonna talk about this beyond this post, because Iām happy with the statement we made in the show itself. It speaks clearly for me and Iām satisfied. While many have said they saw it coming, hoped it would happen and are happy, or didnāt see it coming and liked the surprise of this final moment, others have said they didnāt see it coming (wether they liked it or not) and others have asked me if we planned it from the startā some implying it came out of nowhere. One or two even implying that it was a stunt or added just for Penashi fans.
Needless to say, Iāve gotten lots of questions and comments about it, and I get more every day. So I thought I would comment just this one time about it - to answer all those who have been asking.
Any romantic relationship or overt crush was never what the show was about. Certainly there were some very overt crushesā Sashi/Blaze, Rippen/LSB⦠But that was one small aspect of this series, and I like it that way. Crushes were no greater than competitiveness, overcoming fears, self doubt, learning to trust, etc. The series was about overcoming external and internal conflicts through the power of friendship, tolerance, mutual understanding, learning and growth āsomething I truly believe in. And it was about comedy and creative worlds, and insane and crazy fun action and adventure.
We developed the series creatively and organically, as we wrote it, storyboarded it and animated it āseasons 1 and 2. In both Season 1 and especially in season 2, I knew Penn and Sashi had mutual affection. Was it just friendly? Or was there more? Maybe? Maybe not? Thatās how it can be in life, especially high school. And often, as in life, these things never get verbalized or acted upon. Certainly in Season 2 it became a bit more overt, but again, it was never the focus of the series. These internal feelings did certainly bubble up to the surface here and there. It was part of the episodes in Season 1, and more so in Season 2. Especially in our Pirates season 2 premiere, and in The Last Mountain Beast⦠and most notably, in our series finale.
As we moved towards the finale with āMr. Rippenā and especially in the adventure and battle of āAt The End Of The Worldsā these feelings got heightened, as many feelings do⦠You can see it in more than a few moments, if you look. Even Rippen and Boone talk about what they observe⦠And once the battle is over, and the mission is over, when they return to normal life, and start a new year at High School⦠Sashi has new hair, because I wanted to emphasize change and time passing⦠and something new⦠Not trying to overstate it, so forgive this analogy, but itās like these kids are home from 'the warā, and getting back to normal life as teens. (not serious PTSD or anything, but still itās something to adjust from) And in some ways you can never go back to normal life. (Not analogous, and not at all a literal inspiration, but I always liked how JRR Tolkien and Peter Jackson showed the hobbits returning to life at The Shire After the war of the ringā in Lord of The Rings āthat was directly inspired by Tolkien himself, returning after WW1, and never being the same afterā¦) Our battle for the multiverse was big for our young teenage characters. Especially Penn, but also Sashi- and all that led up to it. Being back home with no more zapping and no more fighting, life is different back in Middleburg.
As we show time passing (one of the purposes of the last Epilogue song that I wrote and rough storyboarded), Penn Looks at Sashi a bit differently now. She has different hair, sheās a bit different, maybe even cuter? (You be the judge) Penn smiles at her goofily. She smiles back. That moment is almost like they are seeing each other in a new way, building on their past⦠In the battle just before, we pushed them physically closer and pushed them each closer to death quite a few times ā Penn especially āand we also tested their friendship back in 'Last Mountain Beastā. All of this was done intentionally, as part of creating this entire story.
At the very end of the series, Sashi takes things into her own hands and acts. Itās impulsive and it builds on all she was feeling before, and more importantly, what she feels in that moment. Penn is surprised- as maybe some of you wereā but he is also instantly on board, in that moment. Thatās how it is. And thatās storytelling I like. Surprise is good. But itās also based on what we established earlier. Itās up to you guys to see it however you want. I canāt tell you how you should feel about it, and I donāt want to. To me itās one action. One moment. And who knows where it goes? Itās 14-year olds and one moment. It certainly advanced things beyond where things were, now that some time has passed, now that theyāre back from 'the warā.
Iām only giving my perspective on this because itās a commonly asked question. Iām glad that so many of you are happy with the series and the finale. Iām happy with our creative expression of these characters and our story. Iām happy with the episodes, and I feel they stand on their own. And you guys can take them however you like.
I wasnāt going to answer any of these questions, but there have been quite a lot, and the above question seemed ok as a jumping off pointā¦
I donāt think Iāll speak about it any more than this, so you can save time and stop asking me about this issue. I donāt want to discuss it in any more detail. I prefer to let the series stand by itself.
Iām proud of the many stories and the overarching story we toldā the Penn and Sashi thing is just one aspect of it. The series is so much more, and Iām happy with where we took all of our characters. Obviously Penn and Rippen had the biggest and most consequential choices and actions in this story.
Thanks to all who watched and enjoyed the show; your questions and comments mean a lot.
Peace & thanks āļøš«āØāØš¦āØāØš«š

Finished watching season 2 of Penn Zero. Such a creative show! And congrats to the creator, my buddy, Sam Levine. (iPad sketch)
My most favorite pic of Larry
Now that season 2 has aired I will post some of the work we did. One of my favorite worlds from season 1 was ācereal worldā for 2 reasons: I love Jay Ward, and some of the first professional work I ever did was on cereal characters like Trix Rabbit, Lucky Charms, etc⦠Most of the time I didnāt have the luxury of taking poses this far in terms of completion but this one was so specific to cereal characters that I really felt I needed to put more attention in to these. They ended up being some of my favorite special poses from this episode.

This is from July 29th 2017 and itās Vonnie, Penn, and Brock from Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero! :D
Wow, that was a perfect finale episode! It made me laugh, cry, smile, go āawwwww!!! ^_^ <3 ā had everything Iād hoped to see plus so many great surprises, it had the awesomeness of every episode but brought up a notch, and I love that all the characters got their happy endings (which are actually happy beginnings in most cases)! ^_^ <3
This show was amazing in every single way! I canāt even decide yet which are my favorite episodes for Season 2 because even just listing the ones Iām leaning towards ends up becoming a list of almost all the episodes! I love every episode of both seasons, each one is like its own mini-masterpiece film! And like films, it never gets boring re-watching the episodes because there are always more hidden gems to discover in each one! :D Iām looking forward to re-watching each episode of season 2 as many times as Iāve already re-watched the season 1 episodes (which is at minimum 5 times each)! :D
Iāve been in a LOT of cartoon fandoms throughout my life, but I have never come across a series as creative as Penn Zero. Most cartoons are particularly creative in 1 aspect, such as story or art direction. But Penn Zero was extremely creative in EVERYTHING! :D From the overall story to the individual episodeās stories (and sub-stories, and sub-sub-sub stories in Larryās tangents), the gorgeous animation, the design of the worlds and all of the characters in those worlds (and there are tons of these! :O Thatās so impressive how unique each world is given the number of them!), the characters themselves and their personalities, the variety of catchy songs and pretty music, the dialogue, and even the showās general premise and format, everything was creative at a high level Iāve never seen before in a cartoon! :D
Penn Zero is one of my favorite cartoon shows of all time and Iām incredibly sad itās over. But Iām glad that it was able to have such a wonderful proper ending and Iām so grateful we got 2 spectacular seasons worth of it! Thank you @samakaphyllis Ā and everyone on the Penn Zero cast and crew for all of your hard work bringing it to life! ^_^ <3
Thanks so muchāØI really appreciate you listing and recognizing all the different types of creativity that our amazing team brought to the show, and Iām glad you loved it. It was a show that was incredibly challenging in almost all aspects- the only easy part was directing our actors ābecause the cast is so perfect.
Nice drawing too!
Cheers š
Still on a Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero fan art kick.
I couldnāt leave out the villains, Rippen and Larry. And nobody wants to get on Phyllisās bad side. o.o
(BTW, the finale was fantastic! If you havenāt seen it, go watch it!)
I couldnāt decide which title I liked more, āLord of the Onion Rings!ā or āLord of the Zero!ā but anyways, hereās a piece (especially for Sam Levine) of the characters of Penn Zero as Lord of the rings characters, or at least elements of the characters~
Rippen is on a separate piece of paper, soon to be uploaded.
Love it!
Penn Zero and the gang in āInk-Toonieā world.
A world where everything is an old cartoon!
I bet youāre also wondering why Larry is a flower, well what is a weakness for Ink? a squirting flower!
also just to clarify, Rippenās design is based off of Pete from the Mickey Cartoons, Penn is based off Mickey, Boone is based off of a police officer, and Sashi is based off of Betty Boop, and Larry is just a flower XD
hope yāall like it!
Nice!

June 12th
Pennās birthday is June 12th.
Not revealing any other birthdays at this point.
Rippenās Earth Birthday would be meaningless info anyway.
At The End Of The Worlds
For those asking about the final moments of our Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero Series Finaleā¦
The story is what we presented and no more explanation will be given by me.
There are mysteries and unanswered questions in life and in our show, and thatās ok for me.
The song I wrote āALL THE DAYSā, attempts to shed some light.āØ
Thanks for watching, and thanks for your support. āØšā¤ļøāØ
Wishing you guys all the best.
