MHA Theory: Is the Voice Quirk a Mutant-Type or Emitter?
I’ve seen this bloodless debate…at least I hope its bloodless.
Some believe Present Mic’s Quirk is a mutant type because it manifested when he was born. For a time, I was thinking this too. But, just recently, I realize something, and it happened while listening to a CD Drama. Present Mic snores. May not mean much but here is the thing. Mutant types are permanent alterations to the body: Mezo’s Dupli-Arms, Asui’s Frog, Gran Torino’s Jet, the Ida Family’s Engine…
What I am trying to say is if Voice is a mutant type, then it is activated every time Present Mic shouts, as mutant Quirks don’t exactly…turn off like transformation Quirks.
So, I do like to think Present Mic’s Voice is an Emitter type. However, I will point out some flaws that I see that would go against the Emitter idea. In Vigilantes Chapter 65, Aizawa used his Quirk on Mic and his voice, as in his ability to speak, disappears.
The sound of your voice is produced by vibration of the vocal folds, which are two bands of smooth muscle tissue that are positioned opposite each other in the larynx. I can understand if Mic’s voice got quieter, but not just gone. This implies that the Erasure Quirk had halted the vocal cords’ movements. How Erasure effects mutant types is that whatever the Quirk is, say Mashirao’s Tail, the limb just stops working and goes limp.
I wanted to do some more research and I came across this reddit post. This person broke down two of the types (Emitter and Mutant) in other categories – Emitters were broken down to two (α-Emitter and β-Emitter) and Mutants were broken down to three (General-Type, T-Mutant, and Non-Static or G-Mutant). To be honest, this helped in having a closer look at the types.
First, let me list off facts about the Voice Quirk:
· Voice allows Mic to increase the volume of his voice, giving him the ability to create loud, high-pitched sounds.
· It manifested right after birth.
· Overuse can cause a sore throat.
· Erasure prevents Mic from speaking, perhaps affecting his vocal cords.
· In the manga, the speech bubbles differ between Mic’s normal speech and him using Voice (regular speech has normal bold borders, Quirk use speech has a more jagged looking border)
This is Mic’s normal speech.
And this is Mic using his Quirk (yes I do think he was using his Quirk in the lower panel; look at his shades, they’re cracking)
Now, let’s have a look at the Mutant Types.
T-Mutant: Right off the bat, this can be written off. T-Mutant refers to bodily features that mimic a form of technology (i.e., Engine).
General Type: Hmmm…this type refers to Mutant Quirks like Frog and Invisibility. These Quirks are part of the user’s physicality, causing them to exhibit irregular body traits that generally have some sort of purpose for them. As a result, Mutant Quirks are passively active…I’m gonna go out on limb here and say that Voice isn’t a General-Type because it’s not passively active.
Non-Static: This is a Mutant type where there is an abnormal physicality of a body part that are regenerable, can change or grow at will, or can be removed from the body, (i.e., Pop Off). This actually sounds more promising. Mic’s vocal cords could be, theoretically, that physical abnormality and he could change his vocal cords for offensive purposes. That can also line with what happened when Aizawa used Erasure on him.
Next, let’s look at Emitters.
α-Emitter: The best I can describe this kind of Quirk, it’s like One Piece’s Paramecia Devil Fruit. A variety of different abilities that has nothing to do with transformation or mutations.
β-Emitter: Emitters with a physical abnormality that has nothing to do with the Quirk (i.e., Tokoyami’s bird head and his Dark Shadow Quirk). This is tricky. Why? Because, in a way, Mic does have a physical abnormality that has nothing to do with his Quirk. His eyes.
His eyes are concentric. Meaning someone in his ancestry probably had an eye-based ability…perhaps another reason why Mic is friends with Aizawa?
I’m sure some would bring up the possibility of this being a Transformation-type Quirk.
Well, this kind of Quirk refers to someone changing their appearance to something, like Kirishima becoming rock, Tetsutetsu becoming iron, Ryukyu becoming a dragon…in other words, Mic’s vocal cords should change to something else, like the kid with the Tongue Cannon Quirk. Granted, we’ll never know what occurs when Mic uses Voice unless Horikoshi reveals it. Until then, Transformation is off the list.
The Voice Quirk is a Mutant Type. Really, the key indicator was the fact Mic lost the ability to speak when Erasure was used on him. If he was an Emitter-type, then it shouldn’t affect him as he wasn’t using his Quirk offensively. I’m aware that the Wiki referred to Voice as an Emitter, but was it ever stated that it was an Emitter-type in the series? Feel free to answer that!
Tell me what you guys think! Do you think Voice is an Emitter or Mutant? Or maybe a Transformation?
I hope you listeners enjoyed this. YEEEEEAAAHH!!
