He didnt know why he agreed to this.
Tim Drake was, at this moment, standing in front of a small cafe awaiting his date that he wishes he wouldnt have to see right now.
Why, would Tim Drake go on a date with someone he has no interest in, you ask yourself?
Well, it's because of his genius older brother, Dick.
"You set me up with whom?!" he clutched his hair, when Dick had called him out of nowhere, telling him he had found the perfect date for him.
Dick let out a contented sigh on the other line,"Yeahhh, no need to thank me."
Tim stuttered, "Yeah no. Im not going."
"youre going. i already said youll be there." The eldest confirmed.
Tim ran a hand down his face, cursing himself. "Why do you hate me so much?"
"Hey. Im doing this for your own good, you gotta get out of the house once in a while, yknow. Put yourself out there..."
"Oh. My. God. Seriosuly Dick! I dont need you to babysit me around all the time! I can ask people out by myself!"
"Tell that to your last two situationships" Dick mumbled.
"Nothing! Il'l send you the date, ok?" Dicks muffled voice came through, as he fumbled with his phone to send Tim all the details.
"Oh. and dont back down last minute. Or leave a bad impression." he quickly added.
"Right. Ok Dick. Bye." Tim sighed as he hung up the phone.
So here he was, sitting on one of the waiting stools outside of the cafe, waiting for his oh so beloved date to arrive.
"Hey! Tim right?” an unexpected voice shouted. Tim shot his head up, seeing a person his age staring right back at him.
Immediately, Tim realized it was his date, shaking their hand and introducing himself, at least to show some courtesy before they both went inside and found a cozy table to sit at.
It’s not that he didn’t like his date, per se.
It’s just… they didn’t have anything to talk about! The only interactions the two had shared was some awkward small talk in between them reading their menus.
His date honestly looked just as bored as him at this point, if not even more.
Across the cafe, you watched the two people painfully, almost getting second-hand embarassment from the uncomnfortable silence going on between the two.
You were just assigned to go serve them, tigthening your apron a little tighter behind your back, preparing yourself to deal with awkwardness before grabbing your pen and notebook out of your front pocket and walking up to their table.
"Hi there! How are you doing? Ready to order?" you put on your best smile, trying to ease the tension.
The dark haired man quickly looked up at you. He was relieved to have something to focus on other than his failed attempts at trying to start up a conversation with his date.
“Yeah, I’ll just get a black coffee and a club sandwich. Thank you.” He gave you a small smile, which you reciprocated, before jotting down his order and then getting his date’s down too.
You returned back to the kitchen and told the chef the assigned foods.
After serving an array of other customers, Tim’s food was done and you were to give it to them, walking over to them and giving placing their meals in front of them.
His posture relaxed a little at the sight of you, your presence honestly easing the tension.
Halfway through their meals, his date suddenly got a phone call.
“Oh sorry.” They said before putting their phone on their ear and
After hanging up, they turned to him and quickly blurted out that they had an emergency and had to go, leaving some money to cover the lunch and strutting out of the cafe.
Tim just sat in his seat as he processed what had happened.
Did his date just ditch him?
I mean sure, he wasn’t particularly enjoying the date, but… was he that insufferable to be around?
His insecurities slowly started creeping up on him, his mind started telling him cruel things. Insecurities that he had shoved far back into his mind now blossoming again.
Tim decided he had a long enough day and left the cafe after leaving enough dollars on his table to cover the tip, trying to blink back his tears as he stepped out the door.
You had just finished your shift, taking off your uniform and grabbing your shoulder bag before walking out of the cafe. Looking around, you were quite surprised when you found that the handsome man you had served earlier was sitting by a curb on the street, his body hunched over and face buried in his hands.
He looked uneasy, and you felt kinda bad for him. Should you go over to him?
No. You had a long day. Better not get mixed up in someone else’s business.
Your body was quicker than your mind, and without thinking, you marched over to him.
“Hey…” you blurted out, the absurdity of your actions catching up to you as he looked up. His eyebags were now more visible, and his eyes rimmed red. He had a confused expression on his face as you leaned closer to him, recognizing you immediately as the pretty waitress from the cafe.
“Are you ok?” You tried asking as you gently sat down next to him.
“Uh.. yeah.” He answered, looking down at the floor. Your sudden presence confused him. And yet… it was weirdly comforting.
You thought of what to say. You want to overstep his boundaries, of course. He was a stranger, after all.
“Well… look I’m sorry about your date.” You sighed.
He took a deep breath in, “Yeah, well it doesn’t really matter now. I wasn’t really interested anyway.”
You snorted, “geez were they that bad?”
“What no no! They were… fine. I don’t know” he threw his head back.
Your mouth tugged up in a teasing smile, your hands landing on your hips. “So what, you just going to sulk here all day?”
He huffed, his own face betraying him as a small smile formed on his face. “No.. why do you care anyway?”
“I have a soft spot for beautiful strangers sulking infront of my workplace, what can I say.” You laughed.
Tim stayed silent for a second, taking in your words.
You were surprised to find no teasing comeback from him. Taking this opportunity to ask him furthermore, “You hungry? You barely ate your sandwich. There’s a place I know not too far from here.” You said softly.
“You can come with me. If you wanna”
Tim’s expressions softened at your invitation. “Sure you’re not tired from bussing tables all day?” He joked.
“Sure I am. But I’d rather not leave you here alone and sad.” You laughed.
All of his instincts told him to say no. All of his rational thoughts said that it was absurd to follow a stranger he had never met before. But all of his rational thoughts were also long gone the second you looked into his eyes so lovingly with your own.
“Sure.” His words left his mouth faster than he could process.
You smiled gently. “Alright then.” You said as you stood up and extended a hand to him.
He gripped your hand and lifted himself up.
You smiled and exchanged your own name before leading him down the street.
Your hand brushed his, and when he didn’t pull away, you softly interlaced your fingers with his and gave him a smile.
God he could die right now by how you were looking at him.
Tim Drake never expected to be here, laughing and holding hands with you.
And honestly, he’s gonna make sure today would be the last day you get to call each others strangers.
