A: cyanobacteria B-D: lichens. These lichens are mimicking the gigantic petioles on the stem of Amorphophallus - one of the world’s largest flowers. This is probably used as camouflage defense from predators. Late nights paying heed to my fungal overlords. I did a quick check of my non-lichenized fungi and mushroom plates today. Notice the pinkish color in some of the plates? That’s a secondary metabolite produced by Acarospora strigata (anyone happen to know what it is???) Before you can even see any hyphal growth, it’s shooting out pretty pink chemicals 💗 Also, three plates were contaminated with three different intruders 😂 The top left is Trichoderma—a bane of large-scale mushroom growers, the white-green one on bottom is Penicillium, and the dark grey one on the right is perhaps Cladosporium. Subbing my lichen cultures onto new media plates today. With quarantine and the labs being closed until recently, the plates got a little overgrown and my poor delicate babies need love and attention in the form of fresh nutrient media. What dis??? This is a close-up of a puffball mushroom pore with the dried spore mass—called a “gleba” hehehe—visible inside. Puffballs spread their spores by opening up this pore so that the spore mass can puff up into the air when the mushroom is disturbed. Usually this is caused by animals, raindrops, or someone picking it up and gleefully squeezing it. Next time you see a puffball please do your part and squeeze.
