#2722 - Xanthoparmelia cumberlandia - Cumberland Rock Shield
First described as Parmelia cumberlandia. Also known as rockfrong lichen, supposedly, but I suspect that might be a typo.
The photobiont is the alga Trebouxia. Widespread, apparently, growing on acidic rock.

Thallus appressed, forming perithecium(slightly raised apoethia , many rhizines( tenuous mycelium hair like holdfasts) hold the lobes directly to the substrates to which it expands. The color of which is a dried light green or greyish green or when wet a light blueish grey. The pigmented photobiont is standardized at a layer. A foliose lichen that is not jelly like, fan or umbellate, or yellow. Is wear I ended up keying this out, to truly ID this species I need to find it again, with a knife collect a specimen and mark its locality. Unfortunately, I failed to do this since this was taken years ago, I didnât have a key, nor did I have proper knowledge of collecting sections of a specimen. From that point on I ended up just guessing and skipping the remaining key steps since they cover 300+ species. Here is my guess :/Â Xanthoparmelia cumberlandia

This semester I am taking a Phylogenetic Systematics class, and for the class project Iâve decided to work with some metagenomic data we have for the genus of lichen-forming fungi, Xanthoparmelia. Yesterday I googled Xanthoparmelia to familiarize myself with the genus, and boy oh boy was I unprepared for getting slammed in the face with supplements and health information for âsexy foothpath lichenâ Xanthoparmelia scabrosa.Â

Colorado rockfrog lichen
This foliose lichen grows loosely attached to acidic rock in bright, arid habitats in North America and Hawaii. It has irregular, overlapping lobes that are bluish yellow-green to yellow-green in color on the upper surface, and a pale brown, rhizinate lower surface. It produces substipate (attached by short pedestal or stalk) apothecia with brown, concave disks and smooth margins. Recent genetic investigation has showed that this species should perhaps be split in 2, but more work is needed to fully identify the physiological or habitat differences separating them.
