you see a prime edible in the woods, call that a milf (mushroom i’d like to forage)
First tiny oyst harvest from one of the PF cakes ☺️
The caps are fairly small, just under an inch in diameter, which makes me wonder if the mass/volume of the substrate affects the size of the fruitbodies 🤔 I only used half pint mason jars for the cakes, so it doesn’t particularly surprise me.
Huge Berkeley’s polypore I found today! Spotted growing at the base of an oak tree on my street. Here it is with my hand and Josie for size comparison. :)

It’s currently day 3 after putting my blue oyster PF cakes out to fruit, and they’re pinning nicely! The one cake pictured above has been exhibiting particularly notable growth. From left to right, compare pins from 8pm last night to 8am this morning and now 4pm this afternoon. It’s so much fun to see how quickly oysters grow, haha. ❤️ (One of these days I’ll get around to posting a timelapse of my pink oyster kit from a few months ago.)
puffballs are criminally underrated among foragers as some of the top edible wild mushrooms. i would say that spiny and purple spored puffballs are currently my second favorite wild mushrooms, just after chicken of the woods. pan fry slices of puffballs with olive oil, butter, salt & pepper and you’ve basically got mushroom potato chips babey. delicious
