Some women prefer not to fly in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy due to nausea and tiredness. While there’s no reason why you can’t fly at this time, if you have any concerns be sure to discuss them with your doctor or midwife. If you are 28 weeks pregnant or more, you will be required to carry a letter from your doctor or midwife, dated no more than 10 days prior to travel, outlining the estimated due date, single or multiple pregnancies, the absence of complications, and your fitness to fly for the duration of the flight(s) booked. Long-distance travel (longer than five hours) carries a small risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT). If you fly, drink plenty of water and move about regularly – every 30 minutes or so. You can buy a pair of support stockings in the pharmacy over the counter, which will reduce leg swelling. Also be sure to find out more about travelling to countries effected by the Zika virus. Group Beta Streptococcus - type of bacteria in the vagina, rectum, or urine, which can be passed on to baby during labor. Mothers are checked before labor for bacteria and get antibiotics during labor, if bacteria are present.
