are you ready?

 “he’s  a  local  stray,”  that  suchs’  unofficially  adopted  -  had  been  taking  care  of  for  years  since  she  came  to  irving,  even  now.  the  dog  lets  her  feed  him  from  her  hand.  “still  haven’t  given  him  a  name.  ideas?”  demanding,  not  asking. / @clementinesfm .​

the other’s comment made max sigh in relief,a short chuckle escaping her lips.”thank god! one less embarrassing thing to keep me up at three in the morning.” a smile was displayed on her lips,her hands griping her guitar.”what are you doing here so late? thinking about life and regretting all of your decisions until now?”

a scoff — escaped his lips at her words. something didn’t feel right about this. maybe it was just the fact that he had been alone, had to be the person he needed for his little sister. maybe it was just the anger. maybe it was jealousy. whatever it was, he didn’t like it. he didn’t like her being here. “that’s funny. can’t even remember her name.” why would he expect her to? she was only a few months old when clem left. “i’m telling you now.” his voice was now stern, instead of its typical soft tone. “you’re not allowed around her. if i find out you have talked to her, been around her, or anything. we’re going to have problems.” lukas began to step backwards. “i’m trying to give her the childhood we never had. i’m trying my best to keep her normal. she doesn’t need you coming in to ruin it. she doesn’t even know who you are. and we’re going to keep it that way.”

a huff — escaped his lips. “i’m surprised you remember me. i figured your brain would be too fried to even comprehend this place was still here.” he expected her to. you can forget some people, but not everyone. and something deep in him had hoped she’d remember him. lukas hoped she’d remember him, give him a hug, apologize, and tell him everything would be okay. but deeper down, he didn’t want that. he wanted her to leave. “why are you here? get tired of running?” he popped his skateboard up into his hand. he remembered it all. the memory of a young thirteen-year-old boy, watching his sister leave. a thirteen-year-old boy who was now left to take care of a newborn and try to make a functioning home. “did you get tired of pretending this place wasn’t real? why? why are you here?”

berry shrugged — her shoulders lightly. she never really understood the point of smoking. the smell was awful enough to her, there was no need to taste it. “i think right by that door. it was a good bit of time ago, though.” the blonde quickly began to dig into her purse. “here….” she handed out a five dollar bill. “go get you one.”

a wave — of shock flooded through the boys veins as he heard the voice. it couldn’t be her? could it? it’s been ten years. he kept count. how could he not? the male was under the belief that siblings never let siblings down. he held that focus for their younger sister. before she could pick up the cigarette, he put his foot on it and twisted it into the ground. “you have some fucking nerve coming back here.” his veins were now burning hot with the years of anger he had. lukas’ foot kicked it to the side.

wesley blew out an obnoxious puff of smoke past his split lips, letting the cigarette dangle between his forefinger and thumb in a 1920s fashion. he glanced down at clementine sitting lazily on the bench. “nope. no lighter here,” he deadpanned, wanting to stir up a reaction considering it was a flat out lie. he let an uncomfortable amount of time past before a cheesy smile spread across his mouth. “kidding. naturally i always carry matches around, in case i want to spontaneously commit arson.”

clementine watched as the other blew out a puff of smoke from his lips, licking her own lips as she waited for the other to hand her a lighter. looking up at the other, she then stood up straight as she felt like the other had been silently judging her for slouching. “mhmm, i’ll believe it when i see it.” she admitted, chuckling a bit. she could tell that the other had been a smoker just like her, it was one of her gifts for lack of a better word, knowing her kind of people, so to speak. “my only question is when and where?”

with a — purse of her lips, berry gently shook her head. she had found herself on a park bench, taking in the surrounding area as she graded papers. she never imagined there would be a need for a lighter of sorts. so, she didn’t think to bring one. “i’m sorry, deary. i don’t have one.” her thick norwegian accent spoke out. “i think i saw a man around the corner with one, though.”

                                    of course he has a light, an LED dollar-store special attached to a carabiner that’s flecked silver, the metallic blue paint chipped from years of wear. he unclips it, presses the button — light immediately dissolving against day. ‘   the extinction of halogen light bulbs will be the death of us all.    ’ a serious sigh escapes, his palm cupped over the end of the mini flashlight to prove a point. no heat. of course, he has a pack of matches in the bottom right pocket of his cargo pants and a lighter in his breast pocket, but that’s not the point. ‘   you should never leave home without your lighter.   ’

another day — another attempt at avoiding returning home. sure, he should find his way there. but there was no reason to. his sister was staying with a friend and it would just be him. this is how he found his foot pushing him and his skateboard down the road. lukas had just gotten off work for the day. another day. another penny. he was lost in his music that was spiraling into his earbuds when he felt his body collide into another. “oh shit.” he cooed out. “i’m so sorry!” he stated as he pulled himself off the ground. “are you okay?”
