Going back to my hc that "Muriel" is a bastardisation of Muriel's actual name - when he came to Vesuvia they misheard and started calling him "Muriel", and being a child/toddler his brain just registered that must be his name
I was looking around for possible kazakh/Mongol-turk names that could possibly be misheard as "Muriel"
My top pick was Myrat Мұрат (or Murat) the Kazakh pronunciation it's roughly "Moo-raht" or "Mee-raht" (the "y" is a soft, almost "i" sound) I feel like it could be easy enough to get mangled, the "iel" ending seems like natural Western adaptation
My other choice was Myrzaly (Мырзалы) Myr-za-ly (the “y” is a soft, almost swallowed sound) it means lord or noble... Also easy to get misinterpreted like Myr → Mur, za-ly → iel
would a depressed person do this? (watched twelve movies by akira kurosawa in less than a week) No.
