Johanna's earliest feelings for a woman was her best friend Marie they grew up together on the French countryside of Domrémy,usually sneaking away from their parents to their little hideaway stashed away in the forest where Johanna would train on her little makeshift dummy,and Marie would practice her Violin,the two of them had peace and a escape with each other,being their true selves with no judgement. Johanna and Marie's families where close do to Marie's mother who was the Tailor for the Zabellè's,their craftsmanship gave them the signature black,and gold color scheme. Johanna's mother Angelique also knew Marie and thought the two of them where great friends,she knew deep down inside that Johanna had feelings for her and Angelique kept it within her until her passing,telling Johanna it was okay and to remain strong. Later in their late teens when Johanna would fight in her uncles bare knuckle fighting circuit in London, Marie would watch Johanna and cheer her on from the sidelines. When Johanna finally decided to ask her best friend to be with her she was met with Marie's drunken father,who scolded her for her looks telling her she'd never be man enough for her,Johanna reluctantly held her tongue,because she did not want to be frowned upon by Marie,and that was the last straw Johanna had wanting to just escape from her overbearing father,internal struggles and unaccepting society of the same sex,she snuck onto one of her father's boats using her birthday gift her signature Zabellé crafted pistol her father gave to her as a excuse to board the ship saying it was a gift for her father's business partner,Violet....not knowing she was being transported with hull filled with 2000 firearms to overthrow Edo,she was brought back to a Japan that was very different from when she saw it as a child,and she was all on her own falling right into the hands of one of her fathers most Sadistic partners,Abijah Fowler.
The two do meet in London 4 years later,when Johanna and Mizu would come to London returning to Johanna's uncles bar,finding Marie as a barmaid who would perform on the Violin and sing,Johanna enjoying that beautiful voice from the bar taking in her passion,but still Johanna was torn,she wished for Marie to become a famous violinist not to grasp onto her so tightly for years,meanwhile Marie's point of view she was angry at Johanna for abruptly leaving unannounced,because despite her soft exterior she had that powerful Scottish accent and gave Johanna a earful,it takes them time to regain eachothers trust but it takes time to heal wounds and reconnect,making Johanna torn between her old flame...and her current lover Mizu.
