by the way i don't doubt the quality of british academic books about the history of this or that civilization, but authors have this irritating habit of dropping early in the preface that this or that civilization is so fascinating despite being backward and uncouth. of making a point of presenting some odd stereotype as the absolute truth of how people still live nowadays. like. brother you lost all my interest here. fuck off.

i used to really like to swim until my parents pushed me into doing it for competition and it became extremely stressful and anxiety inducing for me. i haven't swum for so many years, but lately i got back into it just i now lack the stamina to do it for an amount of time i may deem satisfying. sigh sigh

very interesting distinction between the editions of the secret history of mongols i am reading is that the italian one pretty much keeps both qan and qagan (qa'an) as it is used in the original but never address its meaning while the english one makes a distinction between the terms in the preface but in the text proper uses only the word khan

tangentially related to what i am reading — i am genuinely so very much in love when i read reports and chronicles written in the east that mention bits of european history but it's such a different point of view and a different judgement being passed and even names sound odd and as they are phonetic transcriptions of how the writer heard them from someone. and the "what's wrong with these people" about the most trivial things.

as much as i like a lot to read about history it makes me feel so small and silly like fuuuck how can't i know of hulagu khan the mighty and marvellous hulagu khan whose mother was a nestorian christian
