Ego boost or proof of bland conformism?

I've never seen backgrounds rendered like this. To me, it looks like they were painted on a plastic bag (that also happens to be an avalanche or tidal wave engulfing a city?), a metallic fabric (kind of like Bertrand Piccard's hot air balloon) and a tarpaulin, respectively.

I wonder if Frölich's background in stage design influenced this aspect of his style.
