Biologists, geologists, and everyone in between, it is time to decide who shall receive the 2018 Golden Muffasaurus Award for worst palaeofail!

By January 6, whichever of the nominees gets the most notes will receive this coveted award.

Interestingly, most of the world’s oil does come from the Cretaceous, however! During the middle of the cretaceous, volcanism and ocean circulation patterns combined to make the oceans of the world begin to go anoxic from the bottom up - and they stayed that way for almost half a million years.

Besides the major ecological effects (it was during this time that ichthyosaurs declined; many invertebrate groups also suffered heavily), this created a perfect condition for the decomposition of plankton to form huge petroleum deposits.
