My 50 favourite songs of 2012.
Neglected this Tumblr for a long time again, so here's a predictable end-of-the-year post to make up for that...
1. Metric - "Synthetica" (Synthetica)
Originally this album didn't "wow" me, but it was a grower - after a few listens it's hard to pick which track I like the best, but I think this has to be the winner.
2. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - "Man on Fire" (Here)
3. Jack White - "Love Interruption" (Blunderbuss)
4. Grimes - "Genesis" (Visions)
Perhaps my official favourite song of the year.
5. Niki and the Dove - "The Fox" (Instinct)
6. Marina & the Diamonds - "Prima Donna" (Electra Heart)
7. Hot Chip - "Flutes" (In Our Heads)
Well worth the minute and a half or so of intro...
8. Charli XCX - "Nuclear Seasons" (You're the One EP)
9. Retro Stefson - "Qween" (Retro Stefson)
Definitely one of my favourite acts from the couple of trips to Iceland Airwaves that I've done. These guys are too fun and I hugely love this song.
10. Santigold - "Disparate Youth" (Master of my Make-Believe)
11. Twin Shadow - "When the Movie's Over" (Confess)
12. Chromatics - "Cherry" (from the forthcoming Italians Do it Better compilation After Dark II)
13. Purity Ring - "Obedear" (Shrines)
14. Stars - "The Theory of Relativity" (The North)
Nice to see their return!
15. Beach House - "Lazuli" (Bloom)
Hard for me to single out a track from this album, since I loved a lot of it. But this one has snuck in as a favourite of mine the past month or so. Dreamy.
16. Silversun Pickups - "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)" (Neck of the Woods)
I think if I listened to the radio more, I would've come to hate this song. Seems like they overplayed it in the area a lot. Luckily, I didn't get over-saturated with it.
17. Of Monsters and Men - "Dirty Paws" (My Head is an Animal)
Counting this because this album had its North American release this year, which I guess means it can get on this list via a technicality, even if I don't consider it being from 2012...

19. Electric Guest - "This Head I Hold" (Mondo)
20. Shearwater - "You as you Were" (Animal Joy)
21. Two Door Cinema Club - "Sleep Alone" (Beacon)
22. Fiona Apple - "Every Single Night" (The Idler Wheel...)
23. Best Coast - "Up all Night" (The Only Place)
24. Spiritualized - "Hey Jane" (Sweet Home Sweet Light)
25. Trust - "Sulk" (TRST)
Toronto synthpop, booyah.
26. Japandroids - "The House the Heaven Built" (Celebration Rock)
And if they try to slow you down/Tell them all to go to hell.
27. Alabama Shakes - "Hold On" (Boys & Girls)
28. Frank Ocean - "Super Rich Kids (feat. Earl Sweatshirt)" (Channel Orange)
I wasn't huge on this at first, but it grew on my largely. Right down to the "Benny and the Jets" piano.
29. 2:54 - "The March" (2:54)
30. Porcelain Raft - "Unless you Speak from Your Heart" (Strange Weekend)
31. Sigur Ros - "Ekki mukk" (Valtari)
I actually feel like I (mysteriously/unfortunately) haven't given this album enough of a listen, but I can't ignore it completely either.

This was my jam every day in the summer while being unemployed.
33. Matt and Kim - "Let's Go" (Lightening)
34. Sharon Van Etten - "Serpents" (Tramp)
35. Bear in Heaven - "Kiss me Crazy" (I Love You, It's Cool)
36. Perfume Genius - "Hood" (Put Your Back N 2 It)
Depressing as fuck, but whatev.
37. Major Lazer - "Get Free (feat. Amber Coffman)" (Get Free EP)
38. Family of the Year - "St. Croix" (Loma Vista)
39. Lana Del Rey - "Born to Die" (Born to Die)
It seems outplayed now, but it was a regularly played album for me.
40. The Magic - "Door to Door" (Ragged Gold)
41. Young Galaxy - "Youth is Wasted on the Young" (Shoreless Kid/Youth is Wasted on the Young 7")
42. The Maccabees - "Go" (Given to the Wild)
43. Cat Power - "Ruin" (Sun)
Much more upbeat than Chan Marshall usually is... I like.
44. Young Empires - "White Doves" (Wake all my Youth)
Kinda generic, but I liked this song.
45. Grizzly Bear - "Yet Again" (Shields)
46. El-P - "The Full Retard" (Cancer 4 Cure)
47. Tame Impala - "Feels like we Only Go Backwards" (Lonerism)
48. The Men - "Open your Heart" (Open Your Heart)
49. David Byrne & St. Vincent - "Who" (Love this Giant)
50. Carly Rae Jepsen - "Call me Maybe" (Kiss)
It's pretty tiresome at this point, but I liked this song. It's catchy, fun fluff. It will remind everyone of 2012. I am not embarrassed. I AM NOT EMBARRASSED.
