Latin vs English names.

My understanding is that it's better to use latin names for mushrooms vs English but I'll try and add both. My friend asked me about it. I noticed, for example something that looked like an oyster mushroom growing on wood, and is pink, is not necessarily a pink oyster mushroom and I can't find the English name for it.

AND i heard the Latin names are changing all the time too, as scientists try to re-categorize all the mushrooms into something logical and there is no exact logic. So my thinking is, just document everything.

We got lost, in the forrest. Mushrooms everywhere. Apparently you can eat the jelly toothed fungus, or bring them home and candy them. I'll do that next time.

Found lots of reshi mushrooms, going to take it home to make tea.

King Trumpets

Started Jan 3rd, bought them organic from a grocery store. Took middle sections of stems from the bottom and bigger chunks this time. Marley coffee grinds. The coffee is organic and tastes great. In 5 days I got primordia. It freaked me the fuck out since I was checking it everyday. Chucked a little more spent organic coffee on it.

Blue Oysters Update

Started mid/late December. Three parts of a mushroom were added to some well known brand spent coffee grinds, in unbolied tap water.

Mycelium has now spread to 60% of the jar and the upper part looks dried out, it's shrinking in volume. That's where the green mold is, but that looks like it's dying a slow death so I thought I speed it up. Scooped out the dry moldy part a the top, put some organic spent coffee grinds at the top. The bottom looks like it's holding find, its spongy and collecting moisture of some kind.

Paul Stamets says in Mycelium Running "Young mycelial cell walls are not callous but sticky.." "metabolites are continually secreted" .. and something about stopping growth when there is no water present. I'm guessing that's whats on the side of the jar. Also explains why there's not activity in the top dry part of the jar.

Oyster mycelium eats mold

So I've been testing the YouTube theory that oysters can be grown in coffee grinds. I had sterilized coffee grinds but for some stupid reason i wet them in cold water. I took about 3 pieces of left over blue oyster mushroom from the lower stem and chucked it in a cleaned oyster jar - oh wait, how weird, I like to buy real fishy oysters in glass jars because the jars can be reused to hold juices and stuff when I travel - with the coffee grinds covered with a coffee filter and twine. After a week i noticed the mycelium spreading but also cobweb mold. Now I'm watching the mycelium spread where there was green mold. How bizarre. It's like it's eating it. I'm guessing not all mycelium behaves like this. Theres still a bit of green on the top so I'll observe what happens.

Ugh! I can't figure out what these ones are. The tops are clear and there was a bunch of baby ones near by. They don't look like Amanita Gemmata's since they have grey gills and no warts (well there's just one up on one over there) Looked at Amanita Caesarea and it doesn't look close.

No I didn't take a bite out of them. Will tag later.

nb. Saw this on an identification site. Looks like they maybe stropharia ambigua.
