INSPIRED: Not 100% historically accurate, not trying to be.

(Plus my takes on the group dynamic)

In Depth Analysis here because I’m a Nerd:

Varian- I didn’t stray too far because his design is dear to me. Plus it just didn’t feel like Varian the more accurate I went. I associate Corona with Germany because Rapunzel is a German name. So Germany and just kind of general European inspiration. I based all these on fashion drawings so there was a lot of mixing and matching. The bottom half is closest to the German inspiration. Though I gave the top half lots of embroidery because, German Embroidery. Ironically he may be my favorite character but I think I gave less thought into his design overall.

Hugo- He 100% stole that jacket. It’s his pride and joy, and the nicest thing he owns. He keeps it in great condition. The rest of his clothes are worn. They used to be nice, he stole those too, but a life on the street is going to naturally wear down clothes. I imagine he doesn’t actually know how to wear all the nice things he owns. That’s why things are untied. I debated giving him shorter hair for historical accuracy but I decided he wouldn’t gaf. I chose French inspiration just because I think it’s funny. Legitimately. French Hugo is just funny. Also I knew I wanted European inspiration. Though I’m open to other interpretations of his ethnicity. I could see him being Scandinavian.

Nuru- The Herero Tribe from Congo in Africa. This kind of style isn’t their traditional wear but it’s a reflection of colonization. When the Victorians came they forced the natives to dress like them. Now they use this style as a way to retake that history. Taking the Victorian style and adding their own patterns, colors, and that head wrap style. I thought this was fitting for Nuru. Her country is facing hardships from the sky. Yet she uses astronomy. Nuru also takes the hardships she faces and retakes it in a way she can use. And yes those are all real constellations and stars on her dress.

Yong- His clothes already had clear Chinese inspiration. Or at least a vague East Asian inspiration. I chose Chinese. Imma be honest here. It’s cause of the red and yellow, plus a fireworks kingdom? Yeah, that’s clearly Chinese inspiration. So not a big change. Longer hair for historical accuracy. Soot stains from explosions. Okay, maybe I put the least thought into Yong. Sorry. I’m open to constructive criticism.
