New job, new apartment, same ol' me. Last two weeks have been a sort of perfect mess. Quite literally would plan my next move just moments before. Nonetheless I am now mostly stationary and grateful for it. 🎞 \\\\\\\ Below are some emo musings about East v West. Sponsored by airplane ginger ale, iPhone notes, and sleep deprivation. It seems these themes go on four year rotations. Now, the story is still the same. You probably know it well. High school kid leaves the suburbs and feels bittersweet at the airport gate. I wrote about it compulsively. I even made my senior AP English project about it. Poem after poem - sandwiched between polaroids of home. (Because nostalgia isn't real unless it's fossilized in analog, right?) In cringe-inducing teenage angst I opened the poem with a now-unrecognizable defiance : "They say I'll miss it but I always say I won't" Still, do I have anything different to say? Maybe this time I'm not hauling cheap Bed Bath & Beyond mirrors down 6th avenue. I didn't drag my feet for fear of being trampled. Now, I wander through the aisles alone, using my body to measure shower curtains. At self-checkout I make faces at the camera. I catch myself looking at the screen. Outside, the air is still damp, thick with commuter sweat. Around the corner is a stairway with light, weak and yellow but always on. Perhaps more stubborn than trustworthy. Back in Eden, it's my neighbor's orange tree. Still bowed with fruit despite us taking our share. It sits outside my window, the same living picture every morning. My brother and I go swimming in the pool we never care to chemically balance. My eyes burn, but I don't care. The water is everything - swim practice, the sea, the Lençois Maranhenses lagoon. I watch him glide under the surface and think about the sea lions I befriended on San Cristobal. I turn around again and sit listening to the subway, ear against the glass - feet flat on the ground. For an eternity I stay, admiring the squares of sunlight on my apartment floor. Outside the weather is volatile. It drenches my legs and burns them in the same hour. I'm just East, but I forget to cry this time. I cannot figure out why. (at San Francisco, California)
