Grimwald's Assistant
(Another little short)
To my dearest mealworm,
The rest of the page stayed blank, ink pen drying up in the goblin's hand. Refreshing the pen, he begins to write again.
Whatever Hitch told you, it’s not true.
The letter is crumpled and tossed across the room. Placing a new piece of paper on the desk, the letter is started again.
My Mealworm,
I never wanted this to happen. It was never my intention for how-
Crumbs puts down the pen and lets out a tired sigh. He crumples the paper, compacting it as much as he possibly could, and tosses it to join the others. How long has it been now? Three - four years. Was it even worth the trouble? It would probably be more of a displeasure at this point to receive a letter from him. He pulled out another piece of paper from beside the cluttered desk.
Mealworm,
I’m sure you're well on your way to running the place. You’re probably more of a handful for Hitch than I ever was.
I want you to know that what happened was not my fault. I would have never intentionally-
The words scratched out and paper flipped over.
Mealworm,
I’m sure you're well on your way to running the place. You’re probably more of a handful for Hitch than I ever was.
I miss you dearly, I hope you can come to see that -
The letter tossed and another started.
Hitch,
I did what I had too. If you would have just listened to me-
Letter crumpled. New sheet of paper.
My Mealworm,
I know my actions resulted in terrible consequences for you and the rest of our clan. Hitch will teach you everything you need to know, he’ll be a better mentor than I've ever been.
My ideas were not well understood. I’ll show you all that what I've been studying has been worth it.
Sentences scratched out from the paper. A new sentence added.
You’re going to be a great leader to our-
The words blacked out.
You're going to be a great leader to the clan. Your judgment has always been true.
If you ever need me, I’ll be there.
Yours,
Crumbs
Crumbs looks at the letter one last time, then the pile of crumpled paper behind him. Carefully, he folded the paper neatly. From the looks of the envelope, you'd never guess how imperfect the content was.
He added a few red chunky bracelets to his arms, one of his nicer ponchos and headed out the door. The tower was ominously quiet as it usually was. You could hear mice scurry about on the lower floors. It probably has to do with the illusions of the furniture being weaker when Grimwald was away. It was really only him here, the mice and the few bits of furniture he lugged all the way up to his cozy room. He enjoyed the peace that living in the tower brought him. Endless time to study his true passion. Despite the chores, anything beats the battlefield, he knew he was always meant for more than that.
This afternoon, Crumbs thought to himself, he’d spend most of his time in the library, enjoying the light while it lasted. He had an evening of cauldron scrubbing and other minor chores. Might as well enjoy some of the day. At least before he had to drop off the letter. As he finally completed his dissent down the stairs, the paintings on the walls beside him flickered. The colours became richer, the shadows in the room darker. The usual flowery voice scratched at the back of his mind.
“My study”
Grimwald's study, a few floors above him. Crumbs looked longingly at the warming light perfectly placed on his favorite chair. Tapping his nails on the door frame, he resided himself to the journey up the stairs.
Grimwald fiddled with various notes on his desk, much like he always did. Without looking up he started.
“We are closer than ever to achieving greatness. If the great Elvin masters were still with us they would weep.-"
Crumbs smiled to himself, the usual start to the very long winded spiel that ultimately led to more tasks. He took his seat by the window. The curtains fully blacking out the light beyond them. It was nice hearing someone talk passionately about a shared interest. It felt lucky to find someone who is passionate, so talented, someone willing to teach him, to take a chance on him. Even if that's not how things started for them.
“We are on the precipice of completing the final design. Greatly due to our continued dedication and the dedication we must still uphold -”
Here we go. With a single finger, he pulled the curtain back slightly, making sure the only natural light entering the room was on him. It would be a shame if Grimwald turned to stone, no matter how funny it would be. The consequences of that less so.
“And that's why i’ll be sending you to our darling Meliora. It's imperative that I get this crucial ingredient. More pointedly, to make sure she holds up her end of our arrangement. I trust you completely with this task.”
“It’ll be a couple days from here on foot, give or take a couple more for anything I need to get on the way back. The client doesn't seem like the patient type."
‘Leave him to me. I am working on quite the deal for us. For something like this, its worth the wait”
. . . . . . . . .
A couple days later he was on the edge of Meliora’s forest. Only about six acres, it sat with an opposing weight on the skyline. A few feet in and the foliage completely engulfs the sky. Wasn't long after that before it starts to get…weird. A side effect from the type of magic being cast or a purposeful distortion? Hard to tell with Meliora. It was surprising that she reached out to Grimwald at all. He's been trying to get in contact with her for years just for her to insist on being a part of this. Despite the cost to herself. As much as he didn't want to be in a trapped filled forest, he did feel lucky to meet her. To be the last one to see her. A true master of magic.
Entering the forest, it was almost peaceful. Strangely quiet, much like the tower. It helped take off the weight of the letter in his bags. He could have sent it off in the town before here. He could have mailed it at the town before that. Maybe he'll do it on his way back. What's really the point? He doesn't even know where she is, if she'll ever get it. She won't want it.
Even if she did get it, they wouldn't understand what he was now. After all of that, all this time, this is what he's been doing. Hitch would most likely see nothing else but an errand boy, a far cry from what he used to be. Hitch never had any imagination, and he wasn't going to be running errands forever. He just needed a little more time. Just a little more time and it will all come together.
Distant clopping of hooves echoed. Crumbs quickly positioned himself deeper into the foliage. His green skin seamlessly camouflaged him. Another group of new recruits for the Longleg army, no bet. Every group he seen in the last few months was sadder than the last. They were losing this war. Enlisting whatever they had left.
The group passed him. A pitiful bunch. Some kind of washed up knight and a few bumpkins from the countryside. They must be truly hopeless if only being sent to battle now. Even though it was best not to be seen by them. He didn't want to be chased down and slaughtered as a little boost of morale. They wouldn't last long in these woods. They have no idea what they're in for. It was a shame, a pointless loss of life. Doubt they even knew whose woods they were in. Longlegs always treading where they don't belong.
One of them lagged behind the others. Golden Spurs. Strange. Suppose they won't need them much longer, might as well take them before someone else picks them off.

A short Carriage Ride (A non cannon story)
Here is some idea vomit i've been working on today. I've been losing some motivation on this project lately and need to just needed to make an easy dumb fun thing. I will continue this story if I feel like. Or I will throw up some other word vomit. Following my love Lilie in a short side plot to the main comic. Super non cannon.
Also in my heart of heart I am a fan fiction girl but I want to keep that mentality out on my main comic. These garbage shorts will hopefully keep these un unescapable thoughts out of it.
A tiny fly buzzes around the room. Lilie swats at it uselessly. It continues to buzz around her, circling her head. Constantly circling.
She leans back in the musty cot, the smell of wet earth fills the room. The fly continues to circle above her. Periodically flying closer to her face. Buzzing.
She holds her breath and watches it. Closer still. So close. Landing on her forehead. Lilie takes a deep breath out of her nose. All six of its legs prickle her skin. The fly takes a few steps down her face. Breath in. Drawing down the ridge of her nose to her cheek. Breath out.
Washing calm fills her as she continues to focus on her breath, the cot holds her form better than expected. A clinging conferring hold, despite the dirt on the sheets. The dirt from all the travelers before her. The fly's little legs tickle her lips. Lilie firmly holds them closed preventing entry. Moving her arm into a better position, some of the dirt from the bed crumbles to the floor. More than she thought was on the bed. Did she track that in or was this an even shitty-er inn then she originally thought.
Breath in. The fly's wings tickle the tip of her nose. Breath out. The fly’s body shutter from the force of the breath. Calm. Lilies hand slowly reaches down towards her face. Slowly so slowly. Dirt rubs under her elbow. Who slept on this bed before her? A sleepiness plays at the edges of her thoughts. The cot holds her close. More dirt spills from the sides. The fly fingers at her closed lips. Hopelessly trying to push its legs into her mouth. Wanting in her. Always trying to get inside her mouth. An endless desperation.
Quickly she brushes her hand across her face in hopes to mangle the fly's grotesque little body. Like always, the fly avoids her grasp and begins to circle above her, but for a moment she felt its legs catch under her hand. Just for a moment.
Breathing in deeply, Lilie smiles as she watches it circle her. She hummes and rolls over to her side. This fucken place. It was a small dingy room. Two cots, simple but not as nearly as cheap as they should be. Luckily the room was in a constant sort of darkness, otherwise you see the holes cut out of all the fabric in the room. A half assed effort to hide the stains she thought. Why even try to hide it in a place like this.
Reaching over the side, she picks up some of the clods of dirt littering the floor from under her bed. She crushes it in her hand, rubbing it into her skin. Really dry stuff. Releasing her grip it crumbles back onto the floor. Without getting off the cot, she looks under the bed. A few more clumps of dirt, some dust, but nothing interesting. The fly joins her, lazily underneath till it lands on a little pile of dirt. Lilies fist comes down, mashing the clod. Little bit of rock scatter from the spot. Keeping her hand there for a moment. She excitedly lifted it, nothing but dirt. She flips her hand over, the fly sits atop it, alive as it always is.
“Prick”
The fly goes back to its circling pattern above her. Lilie sits up. Her heavy feet hit the ground, one thud after the other. She hoped the people below her hated that. Lilie rubs her lower back and yawns. Another dark gloomy day, just like the last one and the one before that. It's been nearly a week since the river flooded and they been trapped in this shit one horse town. Below her was the only tavern, outside a modest border post, a sorry excuse for the local gard barexs after that. A couple of small huts. Nothing too exciting. It was a half breed outpost in nymph country. Deeper into the wood the nymphs would have their much nicer settlement. Maybe along the river. But this outpost would do. Better for her and her traveling partners kinds this way.
Lilie could hear the rain pelt the roof above as she went down the stairs. Every step growwned. She briefly thought that she should try to be quieter, then she remembered she was trying to get out of that habit..At the bottom of the stairs the same musty smell as the rest of the inn. The tavern was nearly empty other than her travel companion, a goblin she's trapped with, and some money bags he was talking too. The goblin was great at cutting a deal. His smile was so effortless, so warm and friendly. If only they knew what he was. She hatted liars. She hated people who pretended to be something they weren't and that's all he ever did. You are what you are, there is nothing more to it than that. The fly buzzed as it landed on her shoulder.
“Lets go get our little drunkered”
Lilie strides over to the table of the two men. The goblin was in his gnome disguise, to others he looked like presumably, a gnome. Not that Lilie could see it. Since she first met him as a goblin he looks like a goblin to her. Lilie preferred it this way. She only ever heard stories about goblins before meeting him. Troublesome rats of creatures, dangerous war mongering, the frightening mercenaries of the dark fae. It's laffable looking at the goblin in front of her. Never had she met such a cowered, someone so kickable. They're so short, strange to think back to some of the stories she heard in her hamlet, of the few who came back from the front. This goblin was nothing like that. As well as being so much greener than she expected, so stupidly green.
The other man at the table seem to be a satyr. Not surprising to see one of them in a bar. Bartering over some trinkets. Some of the goblins useless charms. As Lilie neared the table the satyr looked up uncomfortably at her. She hated that. Lilie tried her best to put on a smile, it always felt so unnatural, she could never make it look real. The fly started to buzz around her.
“Goblin”
He turned to her smiley, the same fake smile of her own. She loves to see it.
“Goblin?” the satyr turned to the goblin concerned.
“Thats just her pet name for me. Why don't you come take a seat dear.” He pulled a seat out for her. Placing it strategically close to him and far from the guest at the table.
“Of course my darling. Who is your lovely friend?” Lilie twirled a bit of his hair on the back of his neck. He continued to ignore her but he couldn't stop his ear from twitching ever so slightly. Lilie wondered if the satyr saw.
“My sweetums, this is Guarin, he's one of the magistrate in Taraxacum. Guarin, this is my lovely wife, Eils” The goblin took Lllie's hands in his and kissed it. He looked pointedly at her. So this is how things were going to go was it? She took her hand back. Under the table she rubbed the dampness on the back of her hand onto his pants.
“Oh, I'm just a humble civil servant. It's lovely to meet you, your husband is an excellent charmesmen! To think of meeting some one of such talents in an outpost like this!”
“Never underestimate the power of a storm. Hopefully we will be able to reach the city before my darling wife goes into labor.”
Lilie tensed as the satyr eyed her in surprise. Breathing in, she focused on relaxing the muscles of her face. Keep up that smile. The fly circle closer to the table. Out of the corner of her eye she could see the goblin smug grin.
“You're expecting?" Guarin searched her with his eyes, trying to look without overstepping. This angle was ridiculous. Lilie might be a bit chubby but not remotely close to a pregnant woman about to pop.
“A beautiful boy!” The goblin placed a hand on Lilie's stomach. With everything inside her she resisted slapping him.
“Our third!” He rubbed his hand on her belly like she was a dog. Those claws he calls nails lightly tracing across her.
Lilie politely, naturally she felt, moved his hand off her and put her own hands onto her stomach and looked back at Guarin.
“Bjorn, Blorin and this will be little Blarin”
The goblin snickered under his breath as he drank his ale.
“Lucky man” Guarin comradely slapped the goblins arm. “Not to over step, I’m not too familiar with human kind but you seem so very slim for someone so close to labor?”
Lilie opened her mouth to speak but couldn't think of anything to say. She never could. She could feel her face flush a bit. The goblin snorted.
“My wife is a bit shy with compliments. Gnome babies are pretty small, even for a mix like ours. Now if I was caring it you'd see it”
He was good at talking his way out of things but even this was absurd. Maybe the satyr really didn't know anything about humans or gnomes. Lot of the higher fae were pretty ignorant to the lower fae let a lone humans. Maybe the satyr was drunker then he looked, they probably both are. This was a pretty dumb con.
The goblin put his hand back on Lilie’s stomach pulling her back to the conversation.
“My darling and I are really hoping we can make it in all this rain. We need to see a specialist for this kind of thing. Our carriage won't make it past the river”
“You should join me on my carriage, it will be a real treat!” Gurarin leaned in conspiratively. “I have some special arrangement with some of the water nymphs around here. You'd be surprised how far some good wine can take you.”
“You don't say.” The goblins hand drifted down Lilie's stomach. He lightly takes hold of the fatty ridge at the bottom of her stomach. squeezing lightly.
The fly seems to buzz louder above her. Deep breath in. Lilie reaches her arms around to the other side of the goblins head and tugged harshly on his ear. He takes hand back quickly.
“Maybe that's enough drinks for the evening. When will you be departing for the city? It’s awfully gracious for you to take us along.” She could feel the facade slipping. The smile fading back to her natural expression. She needed this over with.
“No worries my dear! They carriage will be leaving in a hour or so”
“I’ll just go freshen up now” Lilie got up abruptly. The fly following. If she could only get back to her dirt filled room. To be stuck with this guy for who knows how long. Smiling and nodding for hours. A deep dread filled her stomach. The fly buzzed closer to her ear. Lilie swatted at it uselessly.
“I hate being trapped!" Back in the dirty room, Lilie walked in aimless tight little circles. The fly follows all the same. Dirt clods crunching under foot. A damp earthy smell filled the dark dingy room. She laid back on the bed and tried to focus on her breathing. Always have to focus on her breathing. Never can she breathe on her own normally. She can never just be. Just breathe.
“The gods your always breathing so weird”
Lilie sits up. The goblin wanders into the room over to his neighboring cot. He lounges on it like he has always been there.
“You did great by the way. A magistrate carriages, boy, its going be a nice ride”
He reaches out with his foot and taps the side of her bed.
“If you can keep up being my lovely lady wife.”
“Pregnant really!”
“People like helping pregnant people.”
“I have a really small baby, that 's why I don't look pregnant!"
“He he he, the guy has only traveled between the fae city before us and the one we are going to. He doesn't know anything about longlegs.”
He continues to tap the bed with his legs playfully.
“You could say anything and he’d believe you”
Lilie rolled her eyes as she slapped his leg away from her bed.
“Ow, owwy ow”
“Shut up”
“Just don't be so violent in the cab”
“If you keep your hands to your self I wont have too”
“Ah-”
The goblin sat there for a moment with his mouth open before he could think of something to say.
“I was just in character. A loving husband. I’m sorry I went a little too far. I was just really in the moment” He gave a little shrug.
“You pulled my ear harshly enough I got the memo”
Lilie smiles, a tiny true smile.
“And I'll do it again”
------
And that that for now. Maybe i'll come back to it, maybe i'll never will. Probably for the best.

how do you feel now that crumbs has gained such a following? do you ever struggle with living up to expectations, or is it easy to continue being true to yourself and your creative vision? i've been following the story for a while on TT, you're one of my biggest inspirations in my own comic journey, i adore the way you use colour! thank you for posting!!!! i hope you keep at it :-)
Hello! Thank you so much for keeping up with Crumbs and Lilie!
To be honest I never thought anyone would be interested in this at all. So expectation wise I just don't feel like there are any. Not from fans anyway. I find everyone been very sportive of the work so far. I'd say I'm pretty timid to posting online but doing this comic as given me some more confidence.
At lest in the project, I'm really just using the comic as a tool get better till I meet my own expectations of where I want to be as an artist. That would be my hardest hurdle with all of this. Creative vison wise, there's so much I wish I was doing, but maybe by the end of it all we will be there.
I'm glad it's been inspiring to you! I wish you the best on your comic journey! If I could give any advice it would be to just post it! Don't worry where you are now, in time it will be what it needs to be.
If you have any question about the comic or the art prosses feel free to reach out :D. I'll answer them the best that I can.
Do you plan to release the physical version of the comic some time in the future? I'm honestly in awe with the are direction and your skill and would love to have a physical copy of it 🥹 If not, is it possible/will it be possible to order prints or something of the sort?
Sorry I dont check my Tumblr too much!
Im not sure if I will ever do a physical copy at the moment. I'll look into options of that when the series is completed.
As for prints, im been working on setting something up! I will be sending prints out personal so im just setting up for that.
