tl;dr, in a parallel future earth where magic and science have somehow accelerated leaps and bounds, the line between gods and mortals becomes blurred. naturally, there's a lot of power in the hands of a lot of people, and power corrupts!!! so a taskforce called the godkillers is established to curb the population of the "divine", by hook or by crook.

now this gets into spoiler territory!!! hee hee.

eeeeeh, how do i put it??? the tree is a tree and a person, but not the person and also a portal. it's a divine artifact given by aedon, and one of the perks of being a god is well. having access to your very own pocket dimension. the tree can be seen as a physical manifestation of aedon's power/presence/will in paradise, a kind of status symbol that's functional outside of being a status symbol.
