We all know the story behind “Harry Potter and the Philosofer’s Stone”: at the end of the year, Gryffindor was last with 312 points while Slytherin was first with 472 points, but Dumbledore gives the Golden Trio a total of 160 points and to Neville the last 10 points Gryffindor needed to win the House CUp.

This was the main example, according to the fandom, of Dumbledore’s preference for the red-and-gold House but I think we’re missing a couple of crucial facts that happened through the story:

When in Chapter 14 “Norbert the Norvegian Ridgeback”, Professor McGonagall finds Malfoy outside his bed in the middle of the night, she takes only 20 point from Slyhterin, but after not that much time when Filch takes Harry and Hermione to McGonagall’s office (where Neville was too), she takes 50 points each from Gryffindor, for a total of 150 points lost; this, of course, put Gryffindor in last position (when the House was first, as we know)

Then, we know that after Harry fights against Quirrell, he didn’t wake up for three days and he misses the Quidditch match against Ravenclaw, crucial to make points for the House Cup.

So, if we really want to be just, we have to say that these unfortunate consequences led to Gryffindor’s last place and Dumbledore tried to bring back the original order, adding those points that were taken from McGonagall (150 points), plus the others 20 that may have been won by Gryffindor Quidditch team.

If Harryand Hermione didn’t help Hagrid get rid of Norbert, the keeper would have been in real troubles and if Harry didn’t fight against Quirrell/Voldemort well… he wouldn’t have been Harry Potter.
