Things my mother taught me before I turned 27
Always keep a stash of pills somewhere in your bedroom. Uppers and downers. Break in case of emergency. Wrap them up in tinfoil and stick them in your pocket, your purse, under your tongue. You donât want to be left hands shaking in the airport thinking of all the ways you might die in the next few hours.
Donât fuck on the first date. Take it slow and get to know each other. Donât move too fast. Or do. Whatever. You should know early on if youâre compatible in this way. It doesnât change your worth whether your knees are pressed together or youâre on them. Better to know now that he doesnât care to make you cum rather than down the line when youâre stuck in the love.
Youâre lucky to be young and alive. Mostly young. You wonât appreciate your youth while you have it, you will mourn it when itâs gone. You will always be a little bit 21 and brokenhearted no matter how old you are, but itâs more fun when you look the part and your heart aches worse than your back.
Make your own money. Do not be dependent on anyone else. Always be able to leave or you will wake up one day with the never ending job of a housewife doting on a husband you hate and eating those pills you stashed.
Give yourself the chance to change your mind. Give yourself the option. Always leave room for your future self to run headfirst onto whatever path she wants. Do well in school so you can be a doctor or a dropout. You never really know which one youâll want later on.
Donât settle. Love isnât always enough. This is true of friends, boyfriends, family members (especially your dad).
When someone you love mentions something they like, get it next time youâre at the grocery store if you can remember. And while youâre there, only buy the store brand items and donât forget to use coupons. But be thoughtful and be generous in all the small ways.
You will love and be loved again. She tells me this, but Iâm still waiting to find out if itâs true. God, I hope itâs true.
I have beef with #3 because how can I enjoy my youth when the economy is what it is and there are genocides happening all around. Like if you're working class, it's systemically engineered that you can't enjoy your youth
Did u know that the world is a terrible place, and you can see atrocities happen everyday, and work yourself sick and still find yourself living paycheck to paycheck, and you can still laugh with your friends over cheap wine, go for a walk and feel air on your skin, and have sex with people youâre in love with, and make art, and sometimes eat your favorite food, and hear your momâs voice over the phone, read a poem that makes you cry?
Donate to causes you care about, and if you canât afford to donate food or financial aid, write letters, sign petitions, share gofundmes on your social media. Vote in local elections. Go to protests. You donât help anyone by wallowing in both your suffering and theirs. If we have to be alive, we should make it as hilarious and beautiful as possible.
On this note, I donât know how many of my followers are still active on here, but please send me go fund meâs and other mutual aid campaigns and I will share them!

let's be several years behind together
hi sophie, i was stalking your blog again after so long and like your previous asks say, i, too, have been following you since i was 17. iâm now 23 :)
i just wanted to say that your poems were also the reason i started writing poetry. i remember reading your poems back then and feeling so much emotions from them that i thought, i would like to write poetry like this. make others feel the way you made me feel while reading your work.
one of these days, maybe iâll get to publish them. and when that happens, iâll never fail to mention you. you, who inspired me to start writing. maybe iâll even have the courage to tell you who i am.
but for now, thank you.
take care always.
:)
I hope you publish your work! And please share it with me when you do :)
