If Keith was forcing himself to be the black paladin bcs that’s what Shiro expected from him and that’s what he’s “supposed” to do. If the team starts to fall apart with him at the helm. If he tried to be better but in the process left behind what made him such a good paladin to begin with.
If Lance was obsessed with being like Shiro and Keith to the point he doesn’t see his own merits anymore, just the gaps between them. If all he wanted was to be a leader, bcs that’s what his idols are doing so that’s what he wants to do too, to be exactly like them. If he beat himself up over Keith being picked over him as black paladin, bcs it only shows how hes not reached his goals.
If Keith was confronted head-on with the fact that hes not like Shiro, and never will be. If he tried to fix that, to no avail. If he finally realised hes just not a good leader, albeit not realising how good of a paladin he could still be. If he resigned himself to his fate of inevitably causing the end of Voltron.
If they both look at the other’s situation, immediately seeing how nonsensical it is. If Lance saw what Keith was going through, and thought “you’re the best paladin we have, you don’t have to be like Shiro, you don’t have to be a leader.” If Keith saw what Lance was going through and thought “you’re the best paladin we have, you don’t have to be like Shiro, you don’t have to be a leader.” If they didn’t dare actually speak to each other, but slowly realised their advice applied to their own predicaments as well.
If Keith finally understood that being a leader just wasn’t for him. If he understood what he was meant to be instead.
If Lance finally understood that he didn’t need to compare himself to others. If he understood how great of a leader he could be if he stopped.

Anyone else think that the fakeout Paladin death with them all crashing to Earth in S7 was actually the best ending the show could have had? Out of all the season finales, this felt like it could have been a satisfying end without needing to go back out to Honerva. It could have ended there. It would have been tragic, but it would have been satisfying. Like before the cut away to the Paladins watching in hospital? All of the Lions returning to their elements on Earth, then Shiro, the last one left after all he's lost and been through, giving the speech about remembrance and sacrifice and whatever with the Lions now lined up behind him and the pictures of everyone who died. Now change that slightly so that instead of the Lions lined up behind him, we're slowly cutting to shots of them having returned to their elements on Earth. Blue in the snow, Red on a sunny beath, Green deep in the forest or jungle, Yellow on the desert plains and Black high in the mountains, sleeping and waiting, watching over their Paladins' home. And if we really needed to sequel bait, or just give the viewers hope, years later, some kids are playing near a Lion, when its eyes light up, its mouth opens, and uncertain feet step out.
Keith goes over the cliff in a blur of red and steel, the creature dragging him with it.
One moment he is on solid ground, the next he is plunging into open air, locked in a desperate tangle of limbs and metal. The wind tears at him as he punches, kicks, grapples, both of them falling faster and faster.
The monster's jaws snap at his face. Keith grits his teeth and slams his bayard into exposed wiring, sparks flying. His jetpack should fire but it's dead. He's dropping like a stone.
Up on the castle ramp, Pidge's fingers fly across her console.
"I can't get a lock on his suit! The shielding from that thing is scrambling everything!"
"If we try to bring him up, we'll take the creature too," Allura says, voice shaking. "And I cannot risk that with the refugees aboard—we need to think of something!"
Down on the tactical feed, Keith's vitals spike. The creature wraps round him again, claws sinking into his armour, dragging him faster, spiralling, pulling both to their deaths.
Hunk swallows hard. "We could shoot it, right? Take it out mid-fall?"
"You can't," Pidge says. "They're moving too fast. No stabilisation. You'll hit Keith."
There is silence then, raw and terrible. They are watching their friend fall. Watching Keith die.
And Lance can't bear it.
"No. No way." He's already moving. "We are not letting Mullet die. Not today."
He sprints and leaps and the cliff edge vanishes beneath him. For a moment he's weightless, then his thrusters ignite and he dives.
The wind roars past him as he drops, cutting into the slipstream until he's gaining, gaining, closing on the red speck far below.
Keith sees the movement through the corner of his visor, but the metal beast lunges again, and he has no time to do more than twist away.
Then Lance is there, cutting through the fall like he belongs to the air. His visor glows. He matches Keith's trajectory flawlessly.
"Keith. Hold still."
Keith gives a breathless, incredulous laugh. "I'm a little busy!"
"Hold. Still."
Lance angles his rifle, bracing with his whole body. He isn't fighting gravity; he is using it. The targeting reticle flickers, hunts, then settles on the creature's exposed core.
Keith trusts him.
Entirely.
Stupidly.
Completely.
Lance fires.
The laser shot punches a perfect hole straight through the monster's heart. It screams, convulses, spasms. Keith wrenches himself free as Lance reaches out and grabs him by the wrist, yanking him close.
"Got you," Lance mutters, thrusters flaring to counter the fall.
Their descent slows. The canyon walls streak past. The wind howls. And then - they are rising.
On the comms, Hunk shouts with relief. Pidge swears. Allura lets out a shaky breath.
Lance, arm still wrapped round Keith's waist, laughs - raw, breathless, triumphant.
"Never fear. Sharpshooter's here."
Keith exhales, sagging against him. "About time you turned up."
"Fashionably late, as always," Lance replies.
"No," Keith says, voice unexpectedly soft. "You were just in time."
They ascend together, jetpack roaring, leaving the dead beast to fall alone into the abyss.
