Contrapoints on youtube did an episode about this exact thing. Her “whats wrong with capitalism” series

the secret is that my recent discovery and subsequent binge of contrapoints is the true reason i actually started watching this series, and i've drawn a lot of the same conclusions as her it seems

it is hard to really determine exactly how much i enjoy contrapoints because i'm pretty sure i'm actually astral projecting during the entirety of each of her videos.

in snakeladders the kaleans (or at least the ones we meet in the story) have a written language comprised of glyph symbols which represent syllables (I think this is called logosyllabic?)

so kaleans who are living with humans and using human technology like to use text emojis

specifically, they use certain emojis to represent certain glyphs from their original writing system and their text messages are just walls of seemingly unrelated emojis that only they can glean any goddamn meaning from

thanks! i’m so glad this stands out as like, a feature of my style because line economy is something im really trying to focus on lately. i was actually talking to @goldengoatblog about this when I was drawing it. design doll is amazing for posing the figures (here is the reference) but it obviously doesn’t twist and fold the flesh/muscles correctly. there’s a very specific way that the abdomen caves in and the flesh bunches up around the lower back when you bend back like how roadrunner is, that was a bit of a challenge to convey without going into too much detail for my style

so I’m super glad that it reads!

omg, i’ve been wanting to do like, timelapse art and tutorials and stuff, but I can’t decide whether i should focus in on character art, which there are already a TON of people doing, but with more of a emphasis on foundation and design economy, OR take a broader approach and walk through full illustrations

i just got whanged over the head with seasonal depression like... sometime last fall, and it feels like i’ve lost months of my life. like, days have been burning by without me even noticing, i’ve gotten behind on so much i want to do, i’ve accomplished so little

i’m financially wrecked, as usual, and desperately searching for a job with no luck

i still drive for bitesquad, but they discontinued their company fleet and now require drivers to use their own cars. paying for gas and having to deal with the wear and tear on my car makes this job barely worth it

i could be doing so much better financially if i could scrape myself up enough to do commissions, but it’s just so hard to take the first step when you constantly feel miserable and hopeless and scared

summer brings better mood days for me. i’m really learning that about myself. i can get a lot more done in the summer but fall and winter are really really hard for me

i’m about to move into a new house which is exciting! i’m trying to revitalize my online presence which is daunting. i think once i’ve caught up on backlogged work/commissions/etc i am going to try launching a youtube channel? we’ll see how that goes

also snakeladders. it’s another one of those things that just seems too huge to overcome but it wont be right until i get there

“All that’s left is the Anthem.” Anthem could be the name of their city, but I’m willing to bet it’s more of a... you know, abstract calling or empowerment that grants those who embody it with superhuman strength or abilities. You know, like the Light. Becauase Anthem is LITerally Destiny.

sigh. they killed Mass Effect for that.

i hope... i hope there are hot aliens in starfield. bethsoft has succeeded in making me feel attraction to kitty cat people, orcs, and literal zombies so I’d like to see them make sexy aliens and/or robots

dang tumblr it’s been a minute

i havent just done like... random weird art for myself in a while, so enjoy some of roadrunner with @goldengoatblog‘s Grey. they’re... they’re friends

so bad

i liked the shape of water a whole lot but i guess i expected less racism from it given the movie’s premise and message

like, it was a beautiful movie but it was full of racist tropes that just stood out to me like neon and made it really difficult for me to fully enjoy the movie. i mean, you have to learn to ignore these things to be able to enjoy literally ANYTHING but idk, i wasn’t super prepared for it here and it tainted the experience for me somewhat.

it makes me more uncomfortable that no one is really talking about it in their discussions of the movie. my friend and i just kind of sat in silence for a second after the movie like, “so... what... what did you think of it?” trying to awkwardly feel out if we were on the same page and when we realized we were we just tore into it

i dont really want to get TOO deep into it because it’s exhausting to talk about and i have zero interest in debating it but like, they could have at least played down one of giles’ two unnecessary subplots (we could have learned everything we needed to know about him from the diner subplot tbh) to give zelda some more character development. like, i would be less angry at her portrayal as “sassy black friend” if they delved deeper into the nuance that she behaves this way at work as a form of security. i was hoping they would give her a moment of hidden depth, of clarity and competence, at some point in the film. 

specifically, i weirdly expected her to be like “eliza iodized table salt is not the same thing as sea salt,” since they kept making a point to show the labels on those containers and i personally was damn near yellin that at the screen, but idk.

also, there was no story-serving reason that her husband had to be portrayed as lazy and shitty. and like i get that giles is supposed to be our narrator or whatever but we didn’t need him to be, eliza had a voice, that was the point

eliza was a phenomenal character and the film’s saving grace (next to the stunning visual design and cinemetography holy fucking moly). i guess i expected her to be a more passive romantic lead but damn, she was anything but. she was silly and clever and snarky and full of passion and fury, she knew what she wanted and what she was doing in every moment and did everything with full conviction. geez what a babe.

fishman was kind of boring. i get that he was just a plot device but i would have liked to have seen more of him, and his relationship with eliza, than more of giles’s sad life.

though i do wish there’d been a love interest for giles. even just a passing glance with someone, a hint that things would be okay for him.

anyway here’s hoping for a director’s cut with more fish lovin’ action. i’m furious that i had to look at strickland’s pasty thrusting buttocks but didnt get to see the main event. i know it’s hard to keep an R rating if you show a woman enjoying sex, so i’m hoping that’s the reason.
