Youâre not supposed to cry.
You're supposed to sparkle.Â
You're supposed to laugh like youâve never tasted bitterness, bounce off the walls like gravity never quite applied to you, and leave glitter bombs and rainbow cupcakes in your wake.Â
You're the sunshine of the team, the chaos incarnate with fingers covered in icing from baking every other day, held together by too much energy and not enough fear.
But right now, youâre sobbing, shaking so hard it rattles your bones.
The safe house is too quiet.Â
Too sterile.Â
You hate the quiet.
Your world is made of giggles and explosions and yelling at Tony for calling you âa walking serotonin factory,â like itâs not the biggest compliment ever.
Steveâs kneeling next to you, his voice is soft, words calm and even, like a warm blanket.Â
Natâs crouched just behind him, her clothes smeared with blood thatâs not hers. You know what that means. She already got them, the ones who hurt you.
But none of that matters.
You want him.
âBucky,â you whisper softly, the name tumbling out between hiccups.
Steve tries to soothe you. âHeâs coming, sunshine. Heâs on his way.â
But that only makes it worse. It hurts, how badly you need him. The tight, aching space in your chest pulses with panic.
You try to push yourself off the couch even though your leg won't work right. The pain flares, sharp and hot, but not as bad as the panic clawing through your ribs. âI need him now. Please. I want Bucky.â
Your voice breaks, shatters into something raw and desperate.
Steve looks helpless. Even Captain America doesnât know how to hold back the sun when it starts to implode.
Nat lays a hand on your shoulder. Her touch is light but firm. âHeâs coming,â she says quietly. âHeâs already ripping apart the walls to get to you.â
That sounds like him.
It helps, but not enough.Â
The tears keep coming, stupid and hot, blurring everything. Your fingers grip the blanket around you, but itâs not what you want.Â
You want metal and leather and the calloused hands that catch you midair when you launch off rooftops without a second thought. You want the gruff voice that mutters complaints when you bounce in front of him, bright and too close, but never pulls away.
You want Bucky.
And then heâs there.
Steve barely gets out of the way before Buckyâs next to you, metal hand cupping your cheek like youâre made of something too precious to break.
âThere you are,â he breathes. âSunshine, what did they do to you?â
Your hands reach out to grab him, clutching at his jacket, his shoulder, his neck, anything thatâs him.Â
You curl into him like a sunflower searching for sunlight, burying your face in his chest and gasping like you canât breathe without him.Â
He smells safe.Â
Like home.
âI thought you werenât coming,â you sob into him. âI was so scared. I thoughtâŚâ
Heâs already wrapping around you, his flesh hand holding the back of your head, metal arm tucking you into him, so close thereâs no space between your body and his. âShh. Iâm here, baby. Youâre safe now. I got you. Nobodyâs touching you ever again.â
You nod, even as the tears soak through his shirt. His lips press to your temple, your cheek, the corner of your mouth. Like, if he kisses you enough, he can erase what happened.
âYouâre late,â you whisper, your voice trembling and watery.
âI know, dollface,â he murmurs, his voice cracking at the edges. âI shouldâve been faster.â
Steve clears his throat, somewhere behind you. âMaybe give her a second to breathe, Buck.â
âI am breathing,â you mutter into Buckyâs neck, your voice muffled but stubborn.
Bucky glares at Steve. âShe wants me, she gets me. End of story.â
Nat smirks from the corner, arms crossed. âShe was begging for you like the world was ending.â
âSheâs my world,â Bucky shoots back without hesitation.
He tilts your chin up gently, and when your glassy eyes meet his, he winces. âLook at what they did to my baby,â he whispers. âYour face. Your leg...â He trails off, breathing hard, like he might go find the bastards and rip them apart again just for good measure.
âNat already got them,â you say, sniffling, managing a tiny smile. âBet she looked really cool doing it, too.â
âI wanted to be the one to end them,â he mutters darkly.
You tug on his sleeve. âYouâre here now. Thatâs better, the best thing ever. Promise.â
He melts at that, just enough. His forehead presses to yours. âYou scared me, you little menace.â
âI scare everyone,â you mumble, eyes drooping as the exhaustion catches up with you. âBut you always come back.â
âAlways, sunshine.â He kisses the tip of your nose, holding you like youâre breakable. âYouâre my favorite chaos.â
You hum, smiling sleepily at him, and he has to look away so he doesnât fold. âI like when you call me that.â
âIâd like it even more if you didnât almost get yourself killed,â he mutters. âNo more solo missions. No more running ahead without backup. No more playing bait.â
âBut Iâm good bait,â you protest, nuzzling into his chest.
âI donât care. No more.â His voice is final. His grip is absolute. âYouâre sticking with me.â
And maybe that sounds like a means of control to anyone else.
But you? You just smile.
Because youâre safe.Â
Because heâs here.
Even the brightest light needs a shadow to guard it.
And Bucky Barnes is your favorite one.

Hey I just found ur page and it love ur writing, just thought u should know 𩷠also i read u said seasonal depression hit u hard, samesies! sorry u deal with it
I love your work, especially the grumpy sunshine troupe of Bucky and reader. Could you write one where reader takes Buckyâs favorite/go-to hoodie or sweatshirt and he wants it back (but not really, because he loves when she wears it) and she refuses so he tickles her to pieces? đ
Thanks in advance girlie pop! đ¤
Mission: Hoodie Heist
Pairing: Avenger! Bucky Barnes x Avenger! Fem! Reader (Grumpy x Sunshine)
Summary: When you steal Bucky Barnesâ favorite hoodie and refuse to give it back, a chaotic battle of tickles, cuddles, and reluctant (not reluctant) affection unfolds. Unfortunately for Bucky, Sam now has photo evidence.
Word Count: Roughly 1.4kÂ
Warnings: Fluff, comical violence, teasing, flirting, stolen hoodie crimes, cursing, weaponization of puppy eyes, domestication of a deadly assassin <3
Authorâs Note: There were two requests that were kind of similar in prompt, so I combined both ideas :)

Bucky Barnes walked into the compoundâs common room, and his eyes locked onto you instantly. You were curled up on the couch, sipping a hot chocolate with extra whipped cream and marshmallows.Â
Wearing his hoodie.Â
His favorite hoodie.
The one that was a little faded, soft from many washes, and smelled faintly of cedarwood and Bucky himself.
And here you were.Â
Drowning in it, sleeves hanging past your hands, hood pulled over your head, the hem nearly to your knees. Looking way too smug for someone who had committed such a heinous act.
âYouâre wearing my hoodie,â Bucky stated.
You glanced up with your puppy dog eyes. âAm I?â
He scowled. âYou know damn well you are.â
âWow, language, gramps.â
He groaned and took a sip of coffee, muttering something that sounded like âfucking menace to society.â
âIâm not a menace,â you chirped, settling deeper into the couch cushions. âIâm curious and stubborn, but not a menace, Mr. Barnes.â
âYou almost got hit by a cab yesterday because you crossed four lanes of traffic to pet a cat.â
âI needed to pet that cat. His name was Meatball, and he had pretty toe beans. It was an emergency. I did what had to be done.â
Bucky pinched the bridge of his nose. âThat hoodie is mine.â
âItâs mine now,â you said sweetly. âFinders keepers.â
âI live here.â
âAnd yet, you didnât guard your hoodie very well, did you?â You flashed him a grin. âRookie mistake, Sarge.â
He stared at you in silence for a long moment. The corner of his mouth twitched, just a little. If you blinked, you would have missed it. You always managed to pull a smile out of him. âGive it back.â
âNo.â
âDoll.â
âMake me, Bucky.â
He set his coffee down.
Your eyes went wide, the exact moment you realized you might have made a tactical error.
âNo no no no noâŚâ
Too late.
Bucky launched forward, snatching the blanket off you. You squealed and tried to roll off the couch, but his metal arm was faster, wrapping around your waist and hauling you into his lap like you weighed nothing.
âNO! BUCKY!â You shrieked, already laughing as he pinned you with one arm and used the other, traitorous metal fingers and all, to attack your sides.
âYou asked for this!â He didnât even try to hide the smile in his voice now.
Your laughter turned into squeals of protest. âNOâSTOPâIâM GONNAâBUCKY IâM GONNA DIEââ
âYouâre not gonna die.â
âI COULD!â
âPretty sure you wonât, sweetheart.â He was grinning now, fully enjoying himself as you kicked your legs and tried to wiggle away, completely failing.
âUNCLE!â you gasped, flailing.
âI ainât your uncle, sunshine.â
You giggled at his joke and squirmed.Â
âTRUCE!â
He paused, squeezing your cheeks together. âSay it, sweetheart.â
âI surrender.â You whispered.Â
He let up slightly, though his hand was still resting on your hip, ready to tickle you again.
âAnd what do you say?â he asked smugly.
âI say⌠that this is my hoodie now,â you panted, not able to help yourself in stirring the pot.
He blinked.
âYou little brat.â
But before he could start round two of tickling, you twisted in his lap and kissed his cheek.Â
It was a quick, soft press. Featherlight, barely there, but it made him freeze.
And turn a little flushed.
âYou can keep it,â he muttered, eyes avoiding yours.
You blinked. âWait, really?â
âYou look cute in it,â he said gruffly, as if it physically hurt to admit. âLike too cute. Itâs nauseating.â
Your eyes sparked brightly. âAwww, Bucky!â
âDonât make this a thing,â he warned, pointing a finger.
âOh, itâs already a thing,â you sang, grinning like youâd just won a war.
You snuggled deeper into the hoodie and his lap. Bucky sighed, letting his hand rest on your back.
âYouâre exhausting,â he murmured.
âYou love it.â
âUnfortunately.â
You were the human equivalent of a cat in a sunbeam.
Content, warm, curled up right in his lap like you belonged there.Â
Because, obviously, you did.
He didnât seem to mind, either. His fingers traced gentle, idle circles along your spine while you flicked through movie options on the TV.
You smirked, peeking at him with that sunshine and mayhem gleam in your eyes. âHey, Bucky?â
âWhat now.â
âOkay, hear me out,â you said, glancing up at him with that sparkle in your eye, the one that always made him feel like he was about to be talked into something insane. âWe watch Howlâs Moving Castle, again, and you let me explain for the sixth time why youâre totally Howl and Iâm Sophie.â
He gave you a look. âI donât have magic.â
âYou do too have magic,â you said, booping his nose. âGrumpy charm magic.â
He sighed, but you caught the faintest twitch of a smile. âFine. One movie.â
You gasped like heâd handed you the moon. âYou never let me pick the movie. Whatâs wrong with you today?â
âIâm letting you pick so youâll stop talking.â
âOh, Bucky,â you said sweetly. âYou love when I talk.â
He groaned in annoyance, but kissed the side of your head. âJust press play, sunshine.â
So you did.Â
You happily pressed play, then curled deeper into his chest, cheek resting over his heart. He smelled like cedarwood, coffee, something specifically like Bucky himself, and warmth.Â
Despite all his usual icy demeanor, Bucky Barnes ran warm, and you took full advantage.
You made it all of a few minutes into the movie before your voice piped up again.
âHey Bucky?â
He grumbled in acknowledgment.Â
âIf I ever get cursed by a witch and turned into an old lady, would you still love me?â
He snorted with laughter. âYou already act like a grandma sometimes. You carry mints in your pocket and yell at people for not wearing seatbelts.â
âThatâs called caring, James.â
âSure, sweetheart.â
You grinned and cuddled closer. âSoâŚyouâd love me even if I were a raisin too?â
His hand slid up to gently cup the back of your head. âIâd still love you if you were a literal raccoon, as long as you stopped climbing into dumpsters.â
âThat happened one time,â you muttered.
âIt was last week.â
You stuck your tongue out at him, and he pinched it gently.Â
Click.
Both your heads snapped toward the sound at the same time.
There, standing in the doorway, was Sam Wilson.
Grinning.
Triumphant.
âAwwwwwwww,â Sam cooed in a high-pitched voice. âLook at you two! Buckyâs got a cuddle buddy!â
You blinked.
Buckyâs entire body stiffened under you.
Sam tapped his phone screen. âThis oneâs going in the âGrumpyâs Gone Softâ folder. Natâs gonna love this.â
âYou take another picture and I swear to god.â Bucky started, voice already low and dangerous.
But it was too late. Sam had already hit the shutter again.
âBarnes has a cuddle bunny,â he egged on Bucky.
Bucky arms released you gently, settling you on the couch.
âUh-oh,â Sam muttered.
And then?
Bucky lunged.
Sam yelped and bolted, laughing like a madman.
âYouâll never catch me, old man!â
âWATCH ME.â
You scrambled up to your knees on the couch, watching the chaos unfold; the only missing thing was popcorn.
Just before Sam could reach the hallway, Bucky snatched him by the back of his shirt and yanked him backward like a rag doll.
âBucky! Come on, man! Itâs content! People eat this up!â
Bucky wordlessly grabbed the phone, held it up, and chucked it.
Hard.
It flew beautifully through the air and landed in a nearby potted plant with a satisfying thud.
âMY PHONE!â Sam yelled.
âGet a new one,â Bucky muttered, releasing him.
Sam glared at him. âYouâve got issues, man.â
âYouâve got boundary problems.â
Still grumbling, Sam retrieved his poor, slightly dirt-covered phone and slunk away, muttering about âromantic drama and dictators with metal arms.â You peeked over the back of the couch as Bucky stalked back over.
âYou didnât have to throw it that hard,â you teased.
âHe took a picture of me smiling,â Bucky muttered, reclaiming his seat. âThatâs blackmail material.â
You smiled and plopped right back in his lap without missing a beat. He grunted, but his arms found their place around you like theyâd never left.
âYou smiled for me,â you murmured.
âDonât remind me.â
âYou like me.â
âRegrettably.â
You tilted your head up and kissed his jaw. âStill letting me keep the hoodie?â
He rolled his eyes but his mouth curved again, that quiet little smile that only you got.
âYeah,â he said. âKeep it.â
You beamed.
Bucky sighed into your hair.
âSunshine,â he muttered.
âGrump,â you whispered back.
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed!

âWhere is she?â
Buckyâs voice cut through the otherwise quiet room.
The team didnât flinch, accustomed to his daily grumbling.
Clint lazily flipped through a magazine, paying no attention to the scene unfolding.
Steve was polishing his shield, attempting his best to mediate. âBreathe, Buck.â
Natasha sipped her tea and barely looked up. âSheâs fine,â she said, her voice unworried.
Sam barely stifled a laugh and leaned back in his chair. âDude, sheâs not your responsibility. Sheâs grown, man. You donât have to track her every move.â
âWhere. Did. She. Go?â Bucky repeated.
Tony was too busy typing on his tablet to care about Buckyâs panic. But the smirk on his face was undeniable.
He glanced up briefly. âBucky, c'mon. You know sheâs fine. Sheâll be back before nightfall.â
Just as Bucky opened his mouth, he closed it once more. The door to the room swung open, and there you were, bouncing in like a ray of sunshine, Starbucks cup in hand.
âBucky! Look what I got!â you chirped, instantly taking the edge off his simmering frustration.
His neck snapped around so fast you were sure you heard something crack. âWhere did you go?â His voice was almost too calm now; you knew that wasnât good.
You blinked, taking a sip of your iced coffee. âWe ran out of my favorite coffee creamer and I went to drop off my almost overdue books at the library because Iâm responsible.â
âBy yourself?â he demanded, his eyes narrowing.
âWell, no,â you replied. âI had Peter with me.â
Peter, who had somehow remained unnoticed in the corner until this moment, immediately regretted his existence.
âUh. Hey, Bucky,â he squeaked, his voice laced with panic.
Buckyâs intense death glare shifted to Peter. âYou let her leave?â
Peter looked back at you in betrayal.
âI told you heâd kill me; shouldâve never let you talk me into it,â he muttered under his breath.
You rolled your eyes. âIt was barely an hour.â
Bucky, however, didnât seem convinced. âAnd what if someone grabbed you, huh?â
You frowned slightly, raising the drink in your hand. âThen at least Iâd have my coffee?â You shrugged innocently.
Bucky exhaled so forcefully you thought he might pass out from sheer frustration. âGo. Sit. Down. Now.â
With a sigh, you obediently went to the couch and flopped down.
Peter tried to sneak away unnoticed, but Bucky was already one step ahead. He grabbed the back of Peterâs hoodie with a firm grip.
Peter sighed. âThis is it. Iâm a goner. Say nice things at my funeral.â
You couldnât help but laugh. âCome on, Bucky. It was just a coffee run.â
âNext time, Iâm coming with you,â Bucky muttered, his voice still holding that soft edge of fondness despite his grumbling.
You grinned, too pleased with yourself. âAs if you could keep up.â
âOh, I could keep up just fine, sunshine,â he shot back, his words softer now, laced with affection.
He let go of Peter, and the boy scrambled upstairs.
Meanwhile, Sam exchanged a knowing glance with Steve.
That was never a good thing.
Still polishing his shield, Steve muttered loud enough for Bucky to hear, âYou know, Buck, I didnât think youâd be the type to get whipped like this.â
Sam snickered, his grin wide. âYeah, man. Look at you. All tense when sheâs gone for an hour. Itâs almost cute.â
âShut up, both of you,â he grumbled, clearly trying to hide his embarrassment.
Steve, barely able to suppress his own laugh, added, âYouâre in deep, Bucky. Youâre one stop away from buying her flowers and writing a song about it.â
âI swear to God, Rogers, Iâm going to throw you off this fucking building,â Bucky threatened.
Sam leaned back in his chair, looking way too entertained by the situation. âYouâre already whipped, Buck. Might as well embrace it. The songâs gonna be a ballad, right? Something with violins?â
Steve and Sam laughed, ready to keep taking shots at Bucky.
Without warning, Bucky grabbed a vase from the nearby table and hurled it toward Steve and Sam.
Sam ducked behind Steve, who instinctively raised his shield, deflecting the vase with a loud clang. The vase shattered against the shield, sending shards of ceramic skittering across the floor.
However, not a single person flinched. It was like this kind of chaos had become second nature.
You tugged on Buckyâs sleeve, your voice soft but firm. âCome on, Bucky. Sit down,â you said, pulling him gently toward the couch.
He let out a long, aggravated sigh but obeyed, dropping down beside you. âThis is why I spend my free time alone,â he muttered under his breath.
âYouâre right.â You leaned into Buckyâs side. âWe should spend more of your free time alone.â
Bucky pretended not to shift to make you more comfortable against him. âNext time, Iâm coming with you,â he muttered.
You hummed in acknowledgement, curling into his side like a content cat basking in the sun, slowly falling asleep.
With a quiet sigh, Bucky threw a blanket over you, pretending not to notice Steve and Sam stifling their laughter as he ran his fingers through your hair.

It was supposed to be a peaceful day off for the Avengers. The sun was out, the mall was bustling, and for once, everyone had agreed to take a break from saving the world.
But for Bucky Barnes, the day was already feeling like a test of patience.
He wasnât exactly thrilled about the idea of a crowded mall. The noise, the chaos, the shiny stores full of overpriced trinkets. It just wasnât his scene.Â
But you were you. And he would do anything for you.
And with no match against you and your little smile, you dragged him around the mall for the past hour like a hyperactive puppy.
You were practically bouncing with excitement as you skipped from one shop to the next, and Bucky, despite his grumbles and sighs, was always just a step behind you, keeping a close eye on you.
âBucky, come on!â you said, turning back with your bright, infectious smile. âHurry up! Weâre gonna miss all the fun!â
âIâm here to make sure you donât get yourself killed in a mall,â Bucky grumbled, his voice low but fond.
You shot him a grin. âThatâs why I came with you, big guy.â
He rolled his eyes but didnât argue, letting you pull him along.
You had this way of getting under his skin, making him smile even when he was trying to stay grumpy.
Just as you were about to break into a sprint to your favorite store, you tripped over your own feet.Â
Instinctively, Buckyâs hand shot out to catch you, pulling you against his chest.
âCareful, sunshine,â he muttered, his voice unusually soft. His hand lingered at your waist for a moment longer than necessary, his thumb brushing over the fabric of your jacket. âOne of these days, Iâm gonna need to wrap you in bubble wrap.â
âThanks for the rescue, grumpy bear.â You giggled and straightened up, swatting his arm lightly. âBut Iâm fine!â
âIâll be the judge of that,â Bucky grumbled, but there was a hint of amusement in his tone. His eyes narrowed, and he scanned the crowd around you both. He was always on high alert, always protecting you.
As if on cue, your attention shifted to something else. You spotted it: the photo booth.Â
Bright lights flashing in the window, cute little props hanging around. Without even asking, you grabbed his hand.
He let out a sigh, but let you drag him across the mall.
âReally? A photo booth?â he asked, though the annoyance in his voice was half-hearted. You looked up at him, with those stupid doe eyes.
âPlease, Buck, pleeeease! You owe me after almost letting me faceplant!â you grinned as you tugged him along with you.
"I didn't almost let you faceplant," he grumbled, "I saved you."
"Thatâs the spirit!" you beamed.
Bucky grumbled a string of curses under his breath.
âYouâre going in, grumpy!â you said with a grin, âThereâs no way youâre getting out of this. Itâs for us.â
Bucky sighed. âIâm too big for this. You know that, right?â
âToo big for fun?â you teased. âI donât think so!â
There was no fighting it.Â
Bucky wanted to put his foot down, but with how you smiled up at him, he could never refuse you.Â
He ducked into the booth, his broad shoulders hunched, trying not to take up the entire space. There was barely enough room for both of you, so Bucky did the only reasonable thing to do: he picked you up effortlessly and plopped you onto his lap.
"Bucky!"
He pulled you in tighter. "You wanted the pictures, brat. Youâre stuck with me now."
âAlright, letâs take some pictures,â you said, playing around with props and making silly faces until Bucky begrudgingly joined in, his grumpiness melting as he went along with it.
Bucky reached over with one massive hand and squished your cheeks together, a smirk on his face. "Like this, sunshine?"
âBucky! Stop it!â you giggle under his gentle touch.
He chuckled, squeezing your cheeks once more before he put on enormous, goofy glasses and scowled for the next picture.
âThere, happy now?â he grumbled, his tone completely at odds with the ridiculous glasses.
âOh, totally!â you said with a giggle. âYou look adorable.â
Buckyâs eyes narrowed, though you could see the corners of his mouth twitching. âDonât go telling anyone that, okay?â
âOf course not!â you assured him with a grin. âIâm not that mean.â
"And now, a kiss on the cheek," he said with an air of mock seriousness, before planting a quick kiss on your cheek.
You felt your face flush.Â
"Bucky!" you said, your voice suddenly quieter, though your smile betrayed how giddy you were.
He raised an eyebrow. âWhat? Iâm a gentleman. Sometimes.â
Your face flushed a deeper shade of red.
The boothâs final picture snapped. Bucky leaned his cheek against your head and you both smiled.
He pressed a chaste kiss against your temple before he helped you out.
When the photos were printed, you couldnât hide your grin as you handed one set to Bucky.
âGreat,â he muttered. âThis is gonna haunt me for the rest of my life, isnât it?â
You practically beamed. âYep! And Iâm showing the team.â
Bucky narrowed his eyes. âYouâre not.â
âI will!â you declared, undeterred.
Bucky tilted your chin to look at him with just the right amount of force. His thumb gently traced your skin, a subtle reminder of who was in control. âYou wonât.âÂ
âYes, I will,â you insisted, although your voice got softer.
âNo, you wonât.â His thumb traces against your cheek, almost like he was grounding you, pulling you closer into submission. âRight, sweet girl?â
âI wonât,â You agreed and held up your pinky. âPinky promise.â
âGood girl,â he praised, hooking his pinky around yours.
You remained quiet until a small smile creeped up on your face. âYouâre totally going to keep the pictures forever and ever.â
He sighed again, looking down at you with both exasperation and fondness. âIâm never gonna hear the end of this, am I?â
âNot unless you really pout,â you teased, poking his side gently. âWhich Iâm kind of hoping you do.â
âNow I understand why the others like to pick on you,â Bucky muttered.
You pout playfully and he ruffles your hair gently.
You smiled, and when you turned around, you spotted the cotton candy machine.Â
Without hesitation, you bolted toward it, yelling, "Cotton candy, Buck! Letâs get some!"
âI swear to GodâŚâ Bucky sighed, watching you go with a fond smile that he couldnât hide.Â
The only thing worse than being dragged to a photo booth was following you to a cotton candy machine, knowing you'd get even more hyper off the sugar.
Was he still going to buy it for you?
Yes.
Why?
Because, like always, he was helpless against his sunshine.
"Canât take you anywhere," he grinned as he followed after you.
No matter how grumpy he tried to be, when it came to you, Bucky Barnes was completely powerless.
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed!

The hum of the facility was peaceful, but the energy bouncing around inside you was anything but.
When you got out of bed, you glanced at the calendar.Â
February 14th
You sighed and got ready to start your day.
You were still new to the team, only a few weeks into training with the Avengers.Â
It was a potent mixture of excitement, fear, and joy wrapped in one.
You gave it your best shot, but every day, you felt like you fell just short of the bar set by the seasoned heroes around you.Â
The Avengers were the best of the best, and sometimes it felt like they were trying to break you, push you past your limits, and then push some more.Â
Bucky Barnes, in particular, was harder on you than anyone else.Â
He didnât want to admit it, but he cared. Not just because you were younger but because you were different.Â
Sweet, shy, a little sunshine in a place that sometimes felt too dark.
You didnât mind so much. You didnât want to be perfect, but you wanted to prove to the team, especially Bucky, that you could hold your own.Â
But training with Bucky means itâs going to be a long morning.
âCome on, kid,â Bucky said, his eyes locked on yours after you finished his warmups, which felt more like the entirety of a workout routine. âYou can do better than that.â
âI am trying,â you said with a huff.Â
You felt the weight of his gaze and had to resist the urge to fidget under it. His words made you feel small. You wanted to prove yourself to him. You wanted him to believe you could hold your own.
His lips twitched in a small, teasing smile. âYouâve gotta do better than that if you want to make it out there with the rest of us.â
You nodded and shifted your stance.
When his hand shot out to grab you, you reacted, trying to block, but he was faster. Bucky spun you around, twisting your arm behind your back.Â
You grunted as you found your back pressed against his chest, his body flush against yours, his grip tightening around your wrist.
âGotcha,â he murmured, his breath warm against your neck.Â
âI⌠I wasnât ready,â you stammered, embarrassed as you struggled to break free, but Bucky only chuckled.
âYou never are,â he teased, his voice laced with amusement, âBut you will be soon. Donât worry, sunshine. Iâve got you.â
The warmth of his words seemed to melt the tension in your chest, but your heart still hammered in your ears, the proximity between you two making it hard to think straight.Â
With a swift, practiced move, Bucky released you from his grip and pushed you lightly away. You stumbled back a few steps, regaining your footing.Â
He was already readying himself for the next move, his steely blue eyes sharp again.
âAgain,â he commanded, his voice firm but not unkind.
You nodded, trying to shake off the lingering heat from his touch, but it was impossible to ignore. You lunged at him, trying to catch him off guard.
He moved effortlessly, dodging your lunge. His flipped you flat on your back, and before you could react, Bucky was there, pinning you to the mat, his metal arm hovering over your chest.
He leaned down slightly, his face hovering just above yours. âYou really need to work on your form,â he muttered.
You swallowed hard, heat flooding your cheeks. You could feel every inch of him above you.
âNot bad for someone like you,â Bucky said, his voice low, a hint of pride in his words. âBut next time, try not to get flipped so easily.â
You chuckled nervously, still breathless beneath him. âYeah⌠Iâll try,â you whispered, your voice softer than you intended.
There was a strange kind of intimacy in the air, as the world had quieted around you. Your eyes locked for a heartbeat longer than necessary.
But before either of you could say anything, a voice from the doorway broke the moment.
âAm I interrupting something?â Wanda asked as she strolled into the room, watching the two of you with a knowing smile.
You scrambled to sit up, feeling the awkward tension in the air as Bucky stood and offered you a hand, which you gratefully accepted.
âWe were just about to finish this sparring session,â Bucky muttered.
âOh, a sparring session, huh?â Wanda smile. âI didnât realize they was that intense.â She turned her gaze to you, the corners of her lips curling into a grin. âSo, any plans after this? Maybe a last-minute date? There are a lot of nice places around here, you know.â
You shook your head, slightly flustered. âIâm just going to stay in tonight,â you said softly. âMaybe watch a movie.â
âStay in?â Wandaâs eyes sparkled with mischief. âItâs Valentineâs day. How about a date with a guy your age, maybe?â She flashed Bucky a pointed, subtle look, just enough to make the air shift. âI could set up something.â
You didnât catch it, but Buckyâs expression darkened almost instantly. He stepped forward, his jaw tightening, and shot Wanda a sharp look. âNo, she said sheâs not interested in a date. And you need to stop trying to push that on her.â
Wanda raised both hands, feigning innocence. âAlright, alright. Just trying to make sure the poor girl doesnât miss out on anything.â
She turned and walked out of the room, but not before sending Bucky a lingering glance that left him looking slightly annoyed.
You, on the other hand, were oblivious to the exchange. You simply smiled at Bucky, trying to shake off the odd tension in the room.
âIâm sorryâŚâ You trailed off, unsure of how to finish the thought.
Bucky sighed, his gaze softening as he looked down at you. âItâs not your fault.â
âI-,â you started softly, though you were unsure what had just happened. But before you could dwell on it, Bucky clapped you on the shoulder.
âYouâre fine, sunshine.â Bucky smiled. âLetâs get back to it.â
The warmth of his words lingered in the air long after Wanda left, and you found yourself wishing that the conversation had gone a little differently. But it was hard to focus on that when Buckyâs quiet reassurance made you feel special in a way you hadnât expected.
Later that evening, fresh out of a long, soothing shower and wrapped in pajamas, you were met with quiet as you made your way downstairs.Â
For the most part, everyone was out celebrating the holiday of love. But your plans included stuffing your face and watching comedies on the giant flat-screen TV.
Your plans stopped when you found Peter sprawled out on the couch, grinning from ear to ear. He was holding up a large box.
"Hey! Got a delivery for you!" Peter announced, his voice practically singing.
You raised an eyebrow. âWhatâs this?â
He gave you a mischievous smirk. âDunno, but itâs got your name on it.â
Taking the box from his hands, you carefully opened it.Â
Inside was a beautiful bouquet of wild daisies, lavender, and sunflowers, as well as a massive box of chocolates, wrapped with a level of neatness that had to be intentional.
There was a card that said, âHope this makes your day a little sweeter, sunshine.â No name, but you had a very good idea of who it was from.
Before you could even process it, a voice came from behind you.
âYou look surprised.â Buckyâs voice cut through the silence.Â
Turning around, you found him standing in the doorway.
âI didnâtâŚâ you started, but your words trailed off.Â
The fact that he had gone to all this trouble for you meant something, didnât it?
Bucky closed the space between you with a few long strides, and before you could think of anything else, he wrapped you in a hug, pulling you close to his chest. âYou deserve it,â he murmured, kissing your forehead softly. His voice was warm, like melted chocolate, making your heart swell.
Bucky gently pulled back, a soft smile tugging at his lips.
âLetâs watch a movie, yeah?â Bucky asked, his voice smooth, like he knew he was about to make everything even better.
You nodded, still reeling from the sweet surprise. The day had been a chaotic mess of training and tension, but Bucky's thoughtful gesture made it feel like it was all worth it.
As you settled onto the couch, Buckyâs arm wrapped around your shoulder, and you melted against his side.
The movie began, but honestly, you werenât even paying attention. All you could focus on was how perfect this was until Peter suddenly released an exaggerated âAhem!â trying to get a peek at what was happening between you two.
Before you could even laugh, Bucky, without missing a beat, grabbed a vase off the table and threw it straight at Peterâs head.Â
Not to inflict too much bodily injury, but definitely enough to scatter him like a cockroach when the lights come on.
Peterâs spidey sense kicked in just in time, and he shot a web to the ceiling, narrowly avoiding the vase. âOkay, okay! I get it! Iâm clearly not wanted! Iâm going!â He scrambled upstairs.
You let out a soft laugh, and Bucky grumbled under his breath, but there was a slight curve to his lips as he glanced at you. His arm pulled you even closer, and just like that, everything was perfect again.Â
Except for the vase, but that was just a minor detail.
âWHO BROKE MY FAVORITE VASE?â
Or, not so minor.

please ignore me if this is annoying, but i wanted to ask what your plans are for the bucky grumpy x sunshine universe (if you have any)? itâs my favorite bucky series!
đ
I literally love you.
I remember when you went on a spree reading the series and you reblog paragraphs about how much you loved it.
I believe I have a request or two to add to the series first.
But my plans are a little all over the place. I started posting Christmas themed one-shots first, but I kind of want to rewind and go back to the first times Bucky met his sunshine and how they meshed together when she first joined the team. Bucky didn't take well to her at first.
So on the Bucky Barnes Masterlist, I try to go in roughly sequential order. So even though it's posted out of order, I'll try my best to make the timeline there.
I could honestly go on for hundreds of pieces in their story, but my perfectionist attitude (that I'm trying to work on) makes me scrap ideas đ
But thank you so much for writing this, I'll post something tonight because of you :)
we all could use a rock like bucky. just someone to be there for us even when we want space. i hope you find your bucky đŤśđ˝
Thank you, my love!
Bucky Barnes is such a fun character to write for and to crawl around inside his head just for a bit.
As for finding my Bucky, I hope so, but there's no stress.
When I was younger, I felt so pressured to be in a relationship, find my person, and achieve love and peace in the chaos.
But now, I am pursuing learning, growing, expanding my perspective on the world, and healing from childhood trauma. I just want to get better than the day before. Trying new things and doing what I love. Enjoying the journey instead of rushing to the destination.
When my Bucky stumbles into my life, so be it.
I hope you find your Bucky, too. I hope we all do :))
