Two ingredients in bug repellant — DEET and picaridin — can end up in streams. There, they may hurt salamanders but leave mosquitoes alone, a study finds.

The spray you use to keep bugs from biting can end up in local waterways. From there, the chemical can make its way to baby mosquitoes and the young salamanders that eat them. Insect repellant doesn’t do much to the larval mosquitoes. But it can harm salamanders, a new study shows.

Salamanders really don’t need another threat to their well-being right now.

Some clarification: This study was small and definitely needs to be replicated to clearly show which chemicals are damaging to salamander larvae and at what concentrations.

However the study does seem to imply that repellents using DEET did not harm the salamanders, while those using picardin did.

On the other hand, this study was done with spotted salamanders which are in the relatively hardy genus Ambystoma (same as axolotls and tiger salamanders). It could be that both chemicals would be far worse effects on the larva of more sensitive species.

Definitely an interesting article and something that needs to be looked into more.

Nearly a year ago, my dad got a prawn that had been meant as food for a gar at a fish store. The far hadn’t eaten it so it had grown to about two inches long.

Now Big Momma looks like a small lobster and is my family’s favorite aquatic pet. She lives alone in a 90 gallon, as prawn shrimp are territorial and aggressive. But she gets lots of food and attention.

Originally a 10 cent feeder shrimp, now a beloved family pet.
