A Blast from the Past
With Bonnie Tyler’s recent passing, it was recalled that she performed her hit song “Holding Out for a Hero,” on Night of 100 Stars, a glittering televised variety special in 1982, featuring around 230 stars, despite its name suggesting 100, held at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
The event celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Actors' Fund of America, a charitable organization supporting performers, and included contributions from ticket sales, which ranged from $25 to $1,000, with proceeds benefiting the Actors Fund retirement home in Englewood, New Jersey.
During her number, Tyler was joined by several top athletes of the 1980s, such as Olympic gold medalist diver Greg Louganis, among others, in an energetic dance number.
The show won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Program at the 34th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Bonnie Tyler - “Holding Out for a Hero”
With its soaring vocals, dramatic buildup, and unforgettable chorus, Tyler’s 1984 power anthem became one of the most adrenaline-fueled songs of the ’80s and fans still blast it whenever they need an instant rush of energy.
Four decades later, it’s not uncommon for the song to pop up in sports arenas, karaoke bars, memes, and intense workout playlists. On TikTok, a search on the tag #holdingoutforahero delivers more than 11K posts.
“Holding Out for a Hero” not only earned its nostalgia label across generations, but it’s proven it can be reinvented time and time again. Fans of all ages continue to tune in for its message of empowerment and intense emotional release. To date, the power pop song has over 95 million streams on Spotify.
Today’s fans have voted “Holding Out for a Hero” to No. 112 of 199 on Ranker‘s “The Best Rock Songs of the ’80s,” so it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere soon. Bonnie Tyler wasn’t kidding when she decided to “go big or go home” with this larger-than-life power anthem.

In the 1980s, Tyler ventured into rock music with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman. Tyler's biggest hit, "Total Eclipse of the Heart", sold over 13 million copies worldwide and was released as the lead single from her 1983 UK chart-topping album Faster Than the Speed of Night. Tyler's other major 1980s hit was "Holding Out for a Hero". Her successful singles during this period included "Here She Comes" from the 1984 soundtrack to Metropolis and "If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man.)" In 2003, Tyler re-recorded "Total Eclipse of the Heart" with singer Kareen Antonn; their bilingual duet, titled "Si demain... (Turn Around)", topped the French charts.
Tyler's work earned her three Grammy Award nominations and three Brit Award nominations (including twice for British Female Solo Artist), among other accolades. In 2022, she was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to music. Her singles "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "It's a Heartache" have estimated sales of over 6 million units each, and are among the best-selling singles of all time.
