“RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!!”

One of our awesome volunteers brought in this submarine as enrichment for the octos, and this little sea monster has had a fantastic time sinking the ship, causing chaos, and finding food while doing so! I love the simplicity of this little vessel as a form of enrichment, and the potential it holds for more complicated activities.

Usnea quasirigida

I've got sunshine . . . on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside, I've got Usnea quasirigid-day! OK it doesn't exactly work, but close enough for me! This adorable fruticose lichen has a pendant to bushy, dark- to bright-green thallus of thin branches covered in lateral fibrils. The ends of the branches are capped with rounded apothecia surrounded in a radiating margin of fibrils. U. quasirigida grows on coniferous trees in submontane regions, and while it has largely been accepted as a distinct species in NW North America, it is synonymized with U. intermedia in Europe, which obscures its range and habitat preferences somewhat. It's never easy with these guys, I'll tell ya. That doesn't change the fact that he is a sunshiney little pal and I enjoy seeing him.

Smith’s Litter Frog - Leptobrachium smithi

The Smith’s Litter Frog, Leptobrachium smithi (Megophryidae) is sometimes referred to as Vampire frogs because the iris are divided into two parts, the upper third is bright scarlet or yellow whereas the lower part is dark brown or black. Just look at the third picture, a couple of these frogs in amplexus.

This species is known from Thailand and the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as through Myanmar to Assam, India.

reading about the participation of children in rituals as a form of play in ancient greece and came across an incredibly charming story from julius pollux's onomasticon where a flood prevented the adults from reaching a sanctuary to sacrifice a ram to heracles, and the children solved the problem by....sticking a bunch of sticks in an apple to give it "legs" and "horns" and offering it as a sacrifice instead. it's such a charming thought and i can perfectly picture kids these days also pretending at sacrificing an apple "goat" at recess

re my "read books that make you feel stupid" post: reading books you don't fully understand is probably the safest way to push yourself outside your comfort zone. you don't have to embarrass yourself in front of anyone. you can do it from your cozy bed. you can easily get help from book clubs or literary analysis online. you can go as slowly as you want. there's literally no risk.

What a great idea to try at your local library! It's a great way to learn more, and a great way to increase your ability to think elastically. Two tips:

If the book is way too hard, you might get discouraged, so go for just a little above your level.

For nonfiction, this means either a relatively easy book about a completely new subject or an much more complex book about a subject you're proficient in.

For fiction, you can go for vocabulary - flip to a random page, and if there are 3-5 words you don't know, that's about right.

You can also go for structure in fiction - check out plays, epistolary novels, novels in verse, or experimental fiction (House of Leaves comes to mind)

If you want to get better at a new language, the vocabulary rule applies - about 3-5 words you don't know - and make sure it's a subject you're familiar with.

2. If you don't know what to read, consult a librarian!

Tell them what is of interest to you - do you want to read a thriller, a fantasy, poetry, a book on woodcarving?

Give them your general reading and/or knowledge level (e.g., "I've never read about chemistry, so I'm interested in a beginner book that's not too easy" or "I have a master's degree in Biochem so I'm looking for a high-level work to learn more about inorganic chemistry")

Tell them what length/type of work you're looking for (e.g., "I want short academic papers on Chinese folklore" vs. "I want to read traditional folktales in Chinese" vs. "I'm interested in a book that compares folktales across mainland Asia")
