Halfway through the trail are the misterios negros which formed from the most recent volcanic eruption on terceira (I believe sometime in the 1700s?) It was basically a kilometer of layers of volcanic rock hundreds of feet up the hillside that you can jump through to get to the other side of the forest and it was extra spooky because of the fog :)
