He was being serious. Lately, Kiryu had become obsessed with marine life. He and Nirei had spent the last few weeks watching internet documentaries — all of them at his apartment, of course.
Not that Sakura ever invited them. They’d barged in like they owned the place.
Suo let out a laugh. Sakura couldn’t quite tell if it was genuine or just a tired breath. He narrowed his eyes, trying to read it.
“You idiot,” Suo said, finally glancing at him out of the corner of his eye. Sakura’s cheeks were dusted with a soft pink. A small smile curved Suo’s lips. “Hate to break it to you, but mermaids aren’t real.”
“You’re not explaining anything!” Sakura snapped, pointing at him. “What else am I supposed to think?”
He waited, hoping Suo might finally give him something — maybe even make a dumb joke about being a merman instead.
But Suo stayed right where he was, silent and unmoving. He wasn’t going to say anything more.

He…doesn’t know how to feel about the way Suo is looking at him right now. It reminds him of how the people he’s fought have looked at him when they’re seeking a skirmish, but not quite that. No, it reminds him of the look a carnivore gives its prey when it knows its got its next meal cornered. It’s making him feel infinitesimal, and at the same time the only person in the room. Sakura wants to squirm under the intense gaze, throw a punch or two to stop the shiver running up his spine; but he also wants to sit still, staring back, just to see what would happen.
There’s a part of Suo, animalistic and wild, that wants to cage Sakura into their booth and do anything to hear him say his name like that again. The urge to do so prances around in his ribcage, making his blood feel hot. There’s a thrill of excitement alighting in his stomach, and he feels breathless.

There’s part of his mind that’s screaming, telling him I want, I want, I want. It’s loud and pressing into his chest, cramping down beside his heart, fuses with it, and makes every heartbeat into I want you, I want you, I want you.

There’s no scorn, no disgust, but there’s no warmth either. None of the reassurance he’d apparently been hoping for, and God, isn’t that a little pathetic?
Sakura looks at his hands again. His skin is a mess. It’s all red and white and he thinks there’s purple crescents blooming from where he almost tore his flesh open with his nails.

"A winter is coming," he murmured. "But not the kind of winter you know. This one has the color of an animal's pelt... Snow white and night black together, in an unbreakable dance. Intertwined like the Yin and Yang, but also separate, at war with each other."
Although the room was warm, a chill swept through them. The fortune teller's voice rose slightly, becoming clearer: "A tiger. One of unique lineage. A true Alpha king by birth. It will wound more with its sharp gaze than its teeth. Its presence will be a threat, its shadow a challenge. Even before it arrives, the balances are already shifting. The throne remains empty, because it's being prepared for him."
The fortune teller continued, his voice almost crushed under the weight of prophecy: "This stranger, this white-black warrior, will displace Bofurin's very stones.
