So pleased that three of my former students recently completed first drafts. It's a major milestone for any novelist, so many first-timers don't even get that far. It's a time to celebrate, pat yourself on the back, and regroup for the long revision road ahead. But it's not magic. It's just discipline and plenty of ass in the chair time. It's still nearly a year away but with each little step, it becomes more and more real to me. (I love the canvas texture of the title page.) I know my recently departed hero John Berger had a long association with Brick. It made me feel happy and sad at once to receive this transmission from beyond the grave. I hope his voice is ever stilled.
