Astronomers deliver first photo of black hole
She’s beautiful
Y’all calling me a nerd for something that I watched a few of my profs and coworkers tear up over so let me wax poetic for a minute.
This is the densest thing in the known universe. This object doesn’t abide by our laws of nature. Black holes will be around long after every star has died and every planet is a cold husk. This black hole sees all of time around it, all at the same time. You’re looking into infinity and vast nothingness at the same time. This little blurry picture is our first direct look at the most powerful object in the universe. This picture proves Einstein and Hawking we’re right. This picture is the culmination of 100 years of hard work and an array of telescopes crisscrossing our entire planet. This is the first day of a new branch of astrophysics. Fuck y’all calling me a nerd at least I can appreciate the work and passion that went into this very image
Remember those blurry little photos we had of Pluto, and how the world gasped at its beauty when we got those first high res photos, and wonder what marvelous things we’ll be seeing when someday we get those high res photos of a black hole.
