here's my process grossly over simplified lol. the answer for ur question is relevant on 1 and 2 but im making it a general tutorial of how i colour because it's a faq. here I'll be using sniper as an example, say hi to sniper

okay for real though. i just pick from the vibes, but bc im trying to make an effort into understanding my own process further - here's my unconscious thought process unravelled. im sorta going through the basics of colour / emotion association here and put it out. for example, here i won't go for gloomy colours for red sniper because he's in a good mood :)bright red compliments nicely. one thing is i need a comfy base to draw on top because that dictates the entire piece's vibe, so the actual base color itself cant be distracting ( SHOULDNT BE HARD TO COLOR ON when ur putting stuff on top of it) . i like red , it's my go-to reliable colour. but you can use anything. i just prefer these colours. the basics are warm=happy. cold=sad. but the more you draw the more you can experiment with these things outside of the basics. i like associating beige stuff as suggestive even though people usually associate hot stuff with pink and purple. very saturated stuff as hazardous / dangerous / eye catchy. tldr u must know what mood you want to show people first and foremost.

for the actual colour palette, i keep them close to the undertone (i made a gif to show that most of my colours are relatively not far apart from each other in terms of hue and all -- theyre still in that box i drew previously and in this picture); but in case you want to color a blue guy under warn colours, you can either use graying red or blue on the less saturated side. the reason why it works is because in other spectrums of the color almost everything in the gray side are analogous so it doesn't look very out of place. but this is not a rule of thumb. you can absolutely use pure blue

shading's kinda a no brainer for me but i imagine hes under the bright blue sky or some sort here so im making the shadow blue. the dominant colour of the environment should be your hint for the shadow colour. anyway where you put doesnt need to be extremely correct you just need it to look logical enough that people dont immediately go hey wait thats wrong. urmmm

the itty bitty stuff. nothing much and you dont wanna overdo it, it's just the bounce stuff that makes the piece look just a teensy bit more complete
