František Dvořák, born František Bruner, trained in Prague, Vienna, and Munich. He enjoyed success with exhibitions in continental Europe, the UK, and the US, but received little appreciation in his home country until late in his life. At the time he painted The Angel of the Birds, Dvořák was strongly influenced by spiritualism, which he had been exposed to during his time in the US.

Hendrik van Streek (also spelled Streeck), a painter and sculptor specializing in church interiors and still lifes, based this painting on the interior of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. The whitewashed interior is characteristic of Calvinist churches that covered up "idolatrous" decoration and focused attention on the preacher in his pulpit (seen here in the distance, to the left of the central window).
