You donāt start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking itās good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. Thatās why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence.

āThe thing what you learn in directing is that no matter how complex the shooting, you have to remain sensitive to the people around you or the machine will ultimately take over. If you donāt keep in mind the essential humanity of it all, technique will dominate.ā

I always thought one minute flies by. But sometimes it really lingers on. Once, a person pointed at his watch and said to me, that because of that minute, heād always remember me. It was so charming listening to that. But now I look at my watch and tell myself that I have to forget this man starting this very minute.

Lifeās funny. To a kid, time always drags. Suddenly youāre fifty. All thatās left of your childhood⦠fits in a rusty little box.
Itās a tricky thing with a movie, because you can have a great script and a great director, and everyoneās heart can be in the right place, and you still need to get massively lucky to pull it all off - so many things can go wrong.

Being a good director is really less about the technical side [and more about who you have working with you], having a keen eye for that and knowing how to utilize the people around you well. You need a clear vision, for both sound and image, and to be able to communicate this vision well to others. The professionals will take care of realizing the technical side of things. For example, Iāll say something like, āIād like this scene to be somewhat milky and unclear.ā The DP will figure out what filter to use, the lighting, and so on. It doesnāt sound like itās too hard, but in reality there are a lot of directors who donāt have visions.

When I face the desolate impossibility of writing five hundred pages, a sick sense of failure falls on me and I know I can never do it. This happens every time. Then gradually I write one page and then another.
