Last January my father was in the ICU. He'd been going toe to toe with cancer for the last year. My flight back to NYC was coming up - I had a project with a few close friends of mine that would take me to Greece for two weeks. I asked my dad if I should stay. He said, "Why?" "Do what you gotta do". "Go do what you should do". And so, I hugged him and I gave me him a last smile as I walked down the hall. I left for Greece to help interview individuals swept up in the storm that is the refugee crisis. Multiple islands, multiple camps. 5 days in, my father passed away. I got the phone call in the middle of a city square, filled with refugees in transit. Sleeping bags everywhere. It was a hard trip. For many reasons. But, I felt comforted in the fact that I had to go for a good reason - to help voice the concerns of the voiceless. I believe he was happy to know I was out there trying to help, reconcile and bridge the world we live in. Today is a very big moment. Our documentary, which has been shown around the world at several organizations, is now LIVE online. Please watch and share. It's more important now more than ever. For me, it’s where everything started. You don't need permission to make a difference. This project has been an absolute labor of love for everyone involved. A small team of incredible artists donated their time, energy and passion to bring this film to life, and it’s our honor to share it with you now. Everything grew from this simple desire to learn more. To try and understand a crisis, and to share the stories of the people we met on the front lines. We wanted to focus on individuals, in their own words, sharing their experiences - a testimony of why they left their homes, and of what they hoped to find where they were going. Woah... The feature doc I edited, Finding Kim, made it's world premiere at The Seattle International Film Festival yesterday. Not only was it sold out, but also received a standing ovation... So proud of director @aaron_bear and director of photographer @bienczycki for their dedication to showing the world this story.
