Flatstock SXSW Austin is Cancelled- so what next?

As many of you know- on Friday SXSW here in Austin was cancelled due to concerns over the spread of Covid-19. Cancelling SXSW includes Flatsock– the yearly rock poster show that happens the last weekend of the festival.

Nakatomi has been showing at Flatstock every year since 2010, and we’re deeply saddened that couldn’t happen this year. Barring anything crazy- we are sure that the festival will return in 2021.

While it is completely reasonable to exercise caution and cancel the show- that decision made by our government does not come without a huge impact to the local economy. Everyone in the Austin service industry, the bars, the local mom-and-pop shops, rideshare drivers…on and on will all feel the ripple effect of this for months to come.  And, it will most definitely affect us here at Nakatomi.

As usual, we were going to have several exclusives debut at the show (including a signing at the booth by Comic Book Superstar Paul Pope!) but now we will have to release them all online.

SXSW is an important part of our yearly budget, and without the show- we’re looking at a bumpy ride. SO- to make up the difference, we’re going to have a sale, as well as the SXSW exclusive prints online in the next week or so.

Right now would be an EXCELLENT time to go get that print you’ve had your eye on, pick up a Wrightson Cycle of the Werewolf Set, or order our just re-stocked Nameless Goose Pin!

It’s been 10 months since the last Nakatomi-Wide MYSTERY TUBE SALE, and it’s time to once again tempt fate, cast caution to the wind, and DIVE BACK IN FOR THE CRAZY!

The quick and dirty is this-  you’ll get 5 prints from Nakatomi artists past and present, for just $50

EXCLUSIVE PRINTS!

Each tube will come with one of 3  ‘SHINY OBJECTS’ prints by artist Tim Doyle, that are exclusive  to this tube sale.  Choose which one you get in your tube!  You can order 3 times, pick a different print for each order, and get the full set.

The Shiny Object prints measure 12×16 and  will be signed and numbered by Doyle, and will never be for sale  through the Nakatomi site. Edition size determined by the number of orders.

TEST SHEETS!

We’re randomly inserting unique test-sheets with orders! A test sheet is like 4 prints flying at your eyes at ONCE! A byproduct of the Silk-screen process, we run screens on scrap paper as we’re working on a project, and what you get is a random collage of color building up on a sheet of paper, until we judge that it’s ‘done’ and throw it on our stack of completed sheets!  No two prints are alike! We’ve been printing a lot of METALLICA and WEIRD AL prints recently, so you’ll see a lot of those in the mix!! FYI- no tube will have more than ONE test sheet in it.

Each tube will get one- no tube will have more than one Metallica print.

Since Nakatomi teamed up with the RogueNASA Twitter account last year, we’ve been able to donate over $40,000 to science education. We’ve helped FIRST Robotics get kids building bots, assisted Black Girls Code in bringing STEM education to an under-served group, and helped The Mars Generation send kids to Space Camp!

And we did this all by selling pins and patches (and more) with the RogueNASA logo- generously designed for them by artist James White (SignalNoise).

Now, RogueNASA and Nakatomi are turning our energies towards a cause that it feels like the momentum is changing on- Gun Control. The US has been plagued with violent shootings in schools, places of work, and places of worship. Now- it appears the tide is turning, and there is a massive resistance movement to finally enact common sense gun control. All of RogueNASA’s profits from the sale of these items will be donated to Sandy Hook Promise– a charitable organization that takes a reasonable, multi-pronged approach to push for common sense gun control, and anti-bullying programs at schools nationwide.
