god. the ending of trollhunters is so devastating if you think about it for more than ten seconds. i know this is old news but i haven't watched it in a few years so i'm like. damn.
crazyyyyy that throughout the entire show, Jim's humanity is supposed to be his greatest strength. it gives him unique abilities as a Trollhunter, and it influences his choices, like sparing Draal or saving Nomura. everyone tells him at first that being human is not going to be enough to defeat Gunmar (Blinky, Vendel, Strickler especially) but he proves them all wrong! being human wins him almost every battle! he kills Bular! he kills Angor Rot! he survives the Darklands! he saves Trollmarket and Arcadia again and again! he can stay human and still win!
and then Merlin shows up. and in the last three episodes. says: actually, you can't. you cannot defeat Gunmar and save the world as a human. everything else you've achieved, every goal you've surpassed, every way you have made yourself better, it's not enough. you have to give up your humanity, permanently.
it's so crazy. it's almost cruel, actually. you can't escape fate, Jim. hammered in over and over, but he succeeds in pushing back against it just enough that you think, maybe it'll work. and then it doesn't and you realize it was never going to.
devastating.
