心理学者のレヴィ氏らは、アメリカ・オハイオ州の50歳以上の住民660名を対象に、1975年から2001年まで26年間にわたって追跡調査を行った（※4）。

その結果、老化に対してポジティブな意識（「年齢を重ねても自分は魅力的でいられる」「若く見られたい」など）を持つ人は、ネガティブな意識を持つ人よりも、「平均で7.5年長生きする」ことが判明したのだ。

驚くべきは、その差の大きさだ。禁煙による寿命延長が2〜3年、適度な運動が3〜4年とされるなか、「若く見られたい」という意識だけで7.5年も寿命が延びるという結果は、他の健康因子を圧倒している。

なぜ意識が寿命に影響するのか。そのメカニズムは「行動の連鎖」にある。若く見られたいと思う人は、鏡を見て自分の変化に気づき、スキンケアをし、姿勢を正し、人と会う機会を増やす。これらの行動が積み重なって、心身の健康を保つのだ。
