The estate was built in 1968 using the Bison wall-frame construction method, which pre-cast concrete panels rather than a frame structure. Currently there are nine 5-storey blocks (with eight marked for demolition), four 9-storey, three 11-storey, one 12-storey (Shaftesbury St, marked for demolition), and one 13-storey. The 18-storey 14 Shaftesbury St was demolished in 2013 despite roof refurbishment in the 1990s.

The grade II-listed building was originally constructed as a warehouse for textiles manufacturer Rylands and Sons almost a century ago and became a department store in the 1950s. It had been partly occupied by Debenhams since 1973.
The refurbishment project includes four extra storeys, a vast atrium, shopping arcade and enviable views across Manchester.
