So here’s a funny thing I thought I should mention; I cannot visualize human faces!! I struggle with recognition, not only for faces, but I’ve failed to recognize my pets and vehicles at times as well, if they’re not somewhere they’d usually be. I can’t picture faces, I can’t picture my own face. I can’t see faces in my dreams, the idea is there but it never quite executes correctly, it’s unstable and blurry. Prosopagnosia is a spectrum, meaning it varies in severity from person to person. I have congenital prosopagnosia (vs acquired type from some sort of brain injury), so I’ve had this my entire life, I’ve never been able to remember faces, I can’t describe them. The second I look a way from someone, the image is gone. I can try to picture them, but upon seeing them again, it never looks right, the image my brain came up with never actually matches. I work around this in day to day life by utilizing distinguishing features like hair or voice or clothing I saw them wearing that day or the way someone walks or a tattoo or an item they carry or something like that. Unfortunately if that variable changes its game over for me. This makes it hard to make connections with new people, as there’s nothing for me to attach their name to (which means I’ll end up forgetting that too), plus people tend to think you’re rude when you can’t remember who they are.

This is why I don’t draw humans, or specifically human faces. I’ve worked with bipedal and humanoid anatomy in my anthro artwork, but the face has always gotten me stuck. Animals and furries are a lot easier for me, fur colors and patterns that don’t change mean there’s a way for me to recognize the character. Humans change clothes, which can make watching live action shows extremely difficult. Cartoon characters don’t tend to change clothes, it makes things a lot easier for me.
